Looking to purchase a new monitor 23-24", but i dont have a clue what would be a good buy. I currently use a Samsung Syncmaster 2032BW which I have used for about 3 years, and i recently put my laptop next to it and realised how POOR the image quality was on the monitor. Colours looked washed, dull and whites appeared yellow, tried fiddling around but it still looks crap!

Anyway, i use the PC & monitor for about 60% gaming 20% browsing and 20% CAD & photoshop. I've been looking at some of the 120hz monitors and wondered if this would suit my needs, but you seem to get a higher contrast ratio on the 60hz monitors, I'm confused  ! The 120hz monitors seem a lot of £ too, for my uses would i see any real benefit from one of these compared to a 60hz monitor? Would it be better to get an LED, LCD with xx,000,000 contrast with 5ms response and 60hz?

Would be nice to spend around £150 for a decent monitor but i know some of the 120hz are about £200-240+. The max i would really want to spend would be £220 (If i had too!, dont want too!)

Any suggestions, please? ;)

The 2312 would indeed match your criteria.
How much of a difference 120Hz makes seems to differ per person, some can't live without it after having tried it while others don't even notice the difference so it's hard to say if its something you should or shouldn't go for. If you're in a position to see/test it somewhere then do so (a store, a friend, etc).

The 500.000.000.0000:1 contrast ratio's (or what are they up to nowadays ? :P) can be safely ignored. If it's mentioned anywhere, pay attention to the real contrast ratio or better yet look it up in a review where they measured it. Measured contrast ratio's and measured input lag is completely different from the factory specs in some cases.

Thanks for the info, it does look good and i had heard dells were supposed to be the dogs! I may well have to fork out for it

Been looking at the LG IPS235V , does it compare at all to the dell?

Looks good for the money m8 (seen for 128 delivered), and Expert Reviews said this;

'With an IPS panel and wealth of colour options for the ultimate in colour calibration, the IPS235V has deep colours, good viewing angles and contrast, and is great value'

I dont think you'll go wrong for that money tbh

I've got the LG as you probably read on the other thread. Can't tell you if the Dell is worth the premium, but I can say that the LG IPS235V is very, very good value for money. For gaming a 27" is more immersive (I see you're looking at the Iiyama, which is similar to the 27.5" Hanns G that I have) but if you use Photoshop too, you may want to get an IPS screen. For general desktop use an IPS screen is also simply much nicer to look at.
From what I read in this thread from you I would definitely consider the LG, save yourself some money in these times of austerity :D
(if you spend more I wouldn't do it on a 27" Iiyama, better to save up for a Hazro later on)
Maybe give it a week until some more people have given their impressions about the LG and then make a decision.

Thanks, some very sensible and helpful comments. The price of the LG is SO tempting, was just worried about the brightness comments really.

This is a fantastic little monitor for the money.

It seemed a little dark at first, alongside my Samsung 245T, but after a little tweaking (like turning the black level to high) it really does produce a great picture.

Only criticism is the stand is very flimsy. The slightest impact on the table, even when I'm typing, and the monitor wobbles from side to side.

I'll see if I can get a picture of the two side by side so you can see the difference.

Bonjour, Bonjour :) I have an LG IPS235V on order and wanted to ask you if you have your LG connected via HDMI as according to the manual you can only adjust the black level if you use the HDMI connection. For me this is a little bit of a minus point to this monitor if i can't adjust the black level on the DVI connection as i wanted to connect my PC via DVI and my PS3 via HDMI. Any chance you can see if the black level can be changed on the DVI connection?

Unfortunately the black level can't be changed on the DVI connection.

I have brightness on 80, so if you have the black level on 'low' you could still increase the brightness. Still doesn't get quite as bright, though.

Bonjour Monsieur, so you are not turning the brightness all the way up then? Mine is at 100% but I don't feel the need for more, so there is no disadvantage here in practice, is there? I'll need to hunt down an HDMI cable and see if those black levels make a difference.

I really don't understand why LG would let you change the black level on HDMI but not on DVI. I understand you can also change the white balance if you use VGA but not on HDMI/DVI but that is more understandable with VGA being a totally different analogue connection rather than digital.

Nah, the brightness isn't on full. I could probably have it turned down a little more, even. I also have energy saver turned on to max. If I turned this off then it would probably brighten the screen a little.

Brightness aside, the picture quality on the screen is excellent. Almost like looking through a window to my desktop image.
