Hi all,

I believe my PSU has gone bye-bye. But I wanted to test my PC with an old PSU that is still good.
Before I connect it to my lovely motherboard I wanted to check that I'm not going to do damage to my PC.
The main connection fits, but where my broken PSU had an 8 pin in the top left corner (powering the CPU or in my case a APU, i believe), my old PSU only has a 4 pin.

My broken PSU: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/cors...nze-power-supply-cp-9020061-uk-ca-118-cs.html

I would link to my motherboard, but it's not on Overclocker's website. Can I link to external sites?
It's a Gigabyte F2A88XM-D3H (DDR3, Socket FM2+, PCI Express 3.0)

And my old PSU that still works is a Win Power ATX-450. Again, I would link to it but... I don't believe I can.

Thanks for any help. It's outside warranty, so I'll probably end up having to buy a new PSU anyway :-(

Please do not use a Winpower psu. They are garbage of the lowest possible quality and should it fail will most likely damage your pc. Put it in the bin where it belongs.

As for the Corsair, how long have you had it? Depending on the version it will have either a 3 year or 5 year warranty so you may be able to RMA it to Corsair. Have you tried the paperclip test on it? Best to do it with a couple of fans connected to it. It's rather basic but if the unit is dead the fan or attached fans will not spin.

On a side note, I can't believe that a Corsair CX750M is £99.95!! That is just shocking when there are massively better psu's with 7 and 10 year warranties for a similar price or less.

I've had the Corsair 5 1/2 years :-(
I've tried the paperclip test and nothing.
However I've never done the paperclip test before, so it's hard to know if I'm doing it right when there's no response!
I'll try it again will fans attached.

Which PSUs would you recommend rather than Corsair?

Most motherboards with 8 pin CPU power connector will work with 4 pin without any issues. It will be mentioned in MB manual, along with proper position of the plug (the only position it should fit, don't use any force Luke).
Seasonic Ultra Snow 80Plus Platinum looks good.

If there is no response then that means it's most likely dead as a dodo. There is nothing wrong with a lot of Corsairs psu's and I wouldn't avoid Corsair just because one of their budget psu's died after 5 1/2 years. These psu's are on offer at the moment but most of them are way more than you will ever need for that pc so excuse the paste from another thread. For your pc, unless you are running a power hungry gpu such as a GTX 1080ti or Vega 64 the Superflower Leadex III Gold 550w is more than enough power for you. It's a high quality, fully modular, gold rated unit with a single 12v rail of 549.6w with a 7 year warranty. I have the 750w version and it is a very quiet psu. Anything else would be a massive overkill although that pair of Corsair RM-x series psu's are exceptional value.

Better smash that Winpower first, so that some sucker doesn't pick it up thinking it good PSU.

Well, you know what the saying says about suckers...

Well, that would be just about perfect timing of warranty.

Semi-passive cooling mode having PSUs might not show any external signs from powering on.
But Corsair CX isn't one of those.

Even cheap multimeter would be good for basic testing PSU:
Purple wire should have 5V on it always when PSU is getting power.
And after PSU is powered on yellow should be 12V, red 5V and orange 3.3V.

Thank you for the suggestion, I will re-read the book over the weekend and try the Winpower in my motherboard.
But in the meantime I've contacted Corsair and asked very nicely if they would repair my PSU as it's only less than a year out of warranty.

Excellent suggestions, thank you.
If Corsair don't repair my PSU despite it being out of warranty (which is likely), then I'll probably go with the Super Flower 550 or the Corsair RMx 750.
I like Corsair, and their warranty window, but as you say a very quiet PSU for £20 cheaper is appealing.
Thanks again.

Edit: Nutsack! The Corsair's have gone up in price (the 37% off offer has ended).

FYI all, I got this reply: "We’re sorry to inform you the unit itself has a 5-year warranty that would have expired in February 2019. We apologize but we also do not have any kind of repair service available."

I also tested my PC with the Winpower PSU, and it works fine! Yay!
But obviously, I'm not planning on using the Winpower long term.
I guess I'm going shopping!
Thanks again for suggestions so far.

Merry Xmas to me :-)
