Help With Components to buy

Mate wants to buy an AM2 CPU, Mobo and Ram. He has a Tower case. Any recommendations as to a good Motherboard? He is going to buy Geil ram and an AMD Athlon AM2 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ 2.40GHz . He does not want to spend a lot on a Mobo. Ta
 
Tell him to get a Intel Core 2 Duo rather than a dead platform like that (no offence). e2160, gigabyte DS3 and 2GB of cheapest 6400 RAM will do him fine.
 
I thought AM2 were fine if you did not Overclock?

So, even though the Intel chips show a lower GHZ they are still much faster / better?

Which chipset is the one to go for?

Yep, clock speed is pretty much irrelevant these days the only thing the AMD could beat the Intel at was gaming due to the higher cache etc

As for chipset go for the P35 newest and better then preceding Intel chipsets.
 
e2160 (alternatives include e4300, e4400, e6230, e6600, depending on budget)
P35 DS3 for a bit of future proofing. Alternatives inlude the regular DS3 (P965 chipset) and the 650SLi chipset.
cheapest 6400 (I think is the OCuk stuff, might be the Geil)

job done.

Depends more on what your mate is using the PC for? If gaming & encoding video, the C2D, especially the cheaper chips beat AMD's X2 :eek:
