Hi guys

I'm stuck, I cant make my mind up on choosing a cooler for ryzen, i'm not sure what to get, I've had a look at noctua, be quite, cryorig and Thermalright, some others. I've been back and forth on coolers a number of time so im looking for some help.

The problems I have
1. I'm trying not to get something huge, noctua D15, Cryorig R1, Phanteks, le grand macho RT.
2. I'm wanting AMD and intel support so i don't need to get a new cooler if i switch platforms, I may not switch from am4 but its still a possibility.
3. Dont want to pay too much if i can help it and put the saving towards a GPU.
4. I will need to get a mounting kit for all for all my choices.
5. I will overclock.

I have sent a message to them them all, to confirm they will provide the am4 kit but ive had nothing back yet.

I don't know a lot about cooling but i've looked at a few reviews.

Here are my choices and the best prices I was able to find

NH-U14S - £56
Macho Rev - £40
Mugen 5 SCMG-5000 £48
Dark Rock 4 £55 - inc am4

I'm in the same boat as you, my case wasn't ideal for watercooling so I sold my H100 v2, but I do want to go air until I can replace the case later in the year.

I'm currently looking at the Cryorig H7, however finding stock is hard! They are giving free AM4 kits for Ryzen as I don't think they're compatible out of the box.

Thats one of the problems im having ryzen support out of the box, most stores still have old stock, so i need to contact the suppliers but no one has replied yet.

I'd be surprised if you can't get the adapters from most of the places selling the coolers, I'd imagine OcUK have them for brands if they're available - might be worth speaking to OcUK directly and checking.

You can get it in some places but you would need to pay for it.

Im aware of it but only 1 or 2 places have the rev b and the prices is much more then the SCMG-5000.
At least Scythe will send AM4 mounting kit free of charge when sending them proof of purchase of "rev A" cooler and AM4 mobo or Ryzen CPU.

I'm using the Brocken 3 cooler and It does a fantastic job keeping the 1800X cool @3.9, 24c idle 70c max on Very Heavy bench tests. Game temps hover in the lower 50c bracket. Also has a nice off-set so it doesn't catch the ram sticks. It looks basic but it gets the job done with 140mm fan @1000rpm max.
I had the same issue with the brackets as well, but this worked out great for the price. I think one would only work turned fan facing up and the other one needed a new bracket which was sold on here, also the coolers I have were only 130/150 TDP vs the Brocken which is 220 TDP.
Just another thought, have a look at the specs to make sure it doesn't hinder your gfx card socket width wise.

146x125x165
146mm is the width

All 140mm fanned heatsinks run to that risk of protruding to uppermost expansion card slot area.
Smaller ones like Scyther Mugen don't have that worry.

The Hero and K7 as well as a spare B350M I have all fit with room to spare. I think most ryzen boards are ok unless your unlucky, even my old P8Z68 fits.

I would pick the Darkrock 4 based on what I've used previously. But it all depends on case size from side to side and ram height.

Model Dark Rock 4
TDP (W) 200
(L x W x H), (mm) 96.3x 136 x 159.4
Total weight (kg) 0.92
