Help with CPU options

The overall cost there is very good, however personally I feel that by buying the bundle where it is already built and overclocked is worth a little more. I'd rather have it done properly and pay a little more. It's just my preference I guess, I don't have faith in myself to not bugger up building it and overclocking it.

The overclocked bundle I have linked to, that will surely get me through 3 years of gaming? I'm not worried about the slightly better spec CPU if the bundle I link to is good enough, I understand what you recommend is better for someone comfortablt with their own building skills, I am not however :D

How do I know the overall height of the heatsink? By case width is 200mm :)

I completely understand that :)

That Bundle is fine but a little expensive IMO, and the cooler is big, i honestly don't know if it will fit in your case, i think the best thing to do with that is phone them and ask about it.

Are you open to an Intel rig? i have found a nice little i5 2500K rig here for £300, that is actually going to be quite a bit faster than the FX-6100, and very overclockable.

Other than that, the rig your looking at is certainly a big improvement on what you currently have, but whatever you do do phone them about the cooler first :)

An OC'ed 3570k if it fits in your budget will probably give you what you want.

Although I'd probably try and find a cheap CrossHair IV Formula and clock your CPU to 3.8-4GHZ.

I've seen CH IV's go for ~ 50 quid. (Although you get the occasional person who sells and buys it a lot higher)

And obviously some DDR3 RAM.

Yes of course I am open to intel, I just stuck with AMD as I knew it. My graphics card being an ATI Radeon will work perfectly won't it? I know many people with intel who use nvidea.

Slight query on the i5 though, it's overclocked to 4.00ghz where as the bulldozer is 4.40ghz. Performance wise what difference is there?

There is this also...

ATI (AMD) + AMD + Intel + Nvidia it makes no difference what so ever :)

Intel have a good deal higher IPC (performance per clock in normal terms) than AMD, @ 4Ghz it will out perform Bulldozer @ 4.4Ghz easily.

The last Bundle you have there, yes that a nice rig that one. :)

Brilliant!

What PSU would you recommend with that bundle?

Also probably a n00b question but it says "plug and play". Once it is in and I boot up will it need windows reformatting or should it pick up my hard drive and windows installation and boot with all my data?

The XFX 550 Watt i linked earlier.

You will need to format and put a fresh instolation of Windows on it as its a completely different system and will require different drivers from the operating system and the Motherboard Driver CD, which you should get with it. (The Driver CD, not the OS)

"plug and play" is just a term they use to say its ready made, it will come pre-built and you just screw it in your case, plug it all in and.....

You still need to install all the software and OS.

Oh, and you still need to ask about the hight of the cooler for your case, as it also looks pretty big to me.

Ok so what do they mean by...

Prebuilt and configured

Please note that adding in additional memory to the spare slots will require new BIOS settings and the maximum clock speed attainable may be significantly reduced. OcUK recommend a quality brand PSU for use with all our bundles such as the Corsair TX & HX range. Updating the BIOS on the overclocked bundle range will void the warranty on the overclock. If you update the BIOS we will no longer be able to provide support for configuring and maintaining the CPU overclock.

Basically I need to boot up, install Windows and update drivers? Sorry to be a complete novice here!

Not always, it literally seems random whether or not it wants to work, as I've done both Intel to AMD with W8/W7 and no reinstall, vice versa, and needed to install also.

EZ Cool!! Shudder!! They are worse than CiT and are infamous for being crap. To put it in context the 650W costs like £20 to £25.

They are among the worse PSU brands you can get. Even on the Rainforest site that model got a great one out of five scoring by owners.

Edit!!

BTW,you can still get the Phenom II X6 1045T and it is not that expensive. Unlike your 125W TDP Phenom II X4 920,it has a lower 95W TDP rating.

Also,I wonder if your CPU is throttling, and reducing performance in games?? If it is running close to its limit under load,it could happen.

Thanks Martini :)

@ Footyslayer, Failing Martini's suggestion you can also install Windows without a format.

If you try and install Windows on the same drive / partition as your existing instillation it will say "windows cannot install 2 OS on the same partition and will move the existing instillation in to a folder called windows.old"
Do that, and when in the new windows all your documents and files will be in that Windows.old folder on C, just move them all over and then delete that folder.
This works for windows 7 and should be the same for windows 8 unless they changed it.

As for the Cooler, if it is to big i'm sure they can swap it for a smaller one at no extra cost, they have to build the thing from the selected parts anyway and a smaller cooler would costs the same or less if they just used a different one from the same price bracket. :)

If you yourself add more memory, even of the same type, make, model (which it does not need as it has plenty) it will mess up the Overclock, i can't explain why or how properly without harping on in great detail, but what it basically is; if you add more memory modules you will have to put them in to the remaining other DIMM slots, usually those slots run differently to the main slots, they are lesser slots and will bring down the performance of the other already used slots as they all need to run at the same settings.
Its why they are often 2 different colour sets, or are called something like A-1, A-2 and B-1, B-2.... and now i'm rambling....

If you update the BIOS we will no longer be able to provide support for configuring and maintaining the CPU overclock.
By updating the BIOS it will actually reset all the settings back to default, there in killing the overclock OCUK set before shipping it to you, thats why they can't continue support for the overclock, in updating the BIOS the overclock is no longer there.

You never need to update the BIOS, its only something enthusiasts do.

Hope that clears it up :)

Well after a lot of learning and fantastic advice I have ordered the Z77 Gamer Intel Core i5 3570K 3.40GHz @ 4.50GHz DDR3 Ivybridge Overclocked Bundle.

I also ordered the Corsair Enthusiast Series TX 750W V2 High Performance '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply which might be overkill but it gives me plenty of power for possible future upgrades.

Also lastly I will need to format my hard drive as I have ordered a Samsung 250GB SSD 840 SATA 6Gb/s Desktop and Notebook Kit.

Thank you to everyone who has helped and a big thank you to Humbug!

Sure you will be happy and you will definitely notice a good increase in performance, and i would allways reinstall windows after a major component change ie motherboard especially if your installing to an ssd as the install takes no time at all and the longest part of it will be the the windows updates

Hi again everyone, all my bits are here and I am currently building!

Query on the power connections on my mobo. It has the 24 pin connection and a 4 pin connection. As it is an overclocked system does it require both to be plugged in? Also if it does my PSU only has an 8 pin connection so can that be connected with the 4 pins left redundant on the side?

Thanks

Yes the 24 pin ATX and 4 pin CPU power plugs need to be connected.
As you have discovered the 8 pin from the PSU splits in 2.
