i am upgrading my cpu from a 3000 athlon running on asus a8n 32 sli delux with 2gig ram 250gig sata hdd and 6600 gfx and need advice on new cpu.
athlon x2 3800 or opteron 170.

Welcome to the forums. Both would be excellent choices. If I could get the Opty 2nd hand I'd take that. Beyond that, I'd get whichever one was cheapest.

The Opty'll probably clock a little bet better since it's the cream of *** silicon crop.

It has to be an Opteron. With the great overclocking mobo you are getting you may as well get a Opty 165 and save a few quid.
