Hi

I recently got a new gfx card, a 7950gt from 7900gs after it died. However now my computer seems to randomly crash and sometimes just stalls, even when just browsing.

I think it is my PSU a hiper type r 580W, and swapped it for a spare jeantech 450W, and it continued to happen.

Ran memtest on memory and no problems
My other Spec,

Opteron 146
Dfi infinity Sli
2 geil 512mb DDR 400
2x seagate hdds 7200
dvd Rw
creative xfi

any ideas are appreciated

Your first point of call is to check the memory.

Download and burn memtest86+ to disk, then run that for an hours or so. So what happens. You shouldn't get any errors.

Check also that the memory is running at the correct voltage. You might want to check the manufacturers website for configuration details.

Lastly, since you changed the GFX card, you should have uninstalled the old drivers, run drivers cleaner, then install the latest drivers even thou both cards are supported by the same drivers.

ive reinstalled windows so its not my drivers,

my temps seem fine, and im not dong anything intense, browsing music videos etc, and it can be fine for ages or go straight away.

Also, when i burn a dvd that seems to set it off and reset it self

but i will do further memtests

was looking at my temps using the bios, they seemed fine, will monitor with everest now though

Ran memtest for several hours last night, and no errors

using speedfan

all my temps seem good, not one higher than 40c

volts according to it are, PSU is hiper type r 580W
vcore 1.38
vcore2 1.55
+3.3v 3.23
+5v 4.92
+12v 11.71
-12v 0.06v
-5v -1.03
+5v 5.03
vbat 3.06

Voltages do look a little low, but not critical. Can you monitor them as you load the system to see if they spike or drop massively when the pc fails?

Could it be my hard drive, as i reinstalled Windows again, and as my c: drive began to fill up it started again, while b4 it was fine

Also when i ran chkdsk it found some errors, but i dont know if this was from the constant restarting or problems with the drive

Also when i run ubuntu i havent had one crash

If you suspect the HD, does not seagate have a diagnostic tool like most of the other mainstream manufacturers?

Ran the check tool a few times and no errors

anyone any guesses i cant even load windows anymore without it crashing almost straightaway

i have looked in event viewer, and there isn't anything that stands out. IPSEC seems to get errors before crashing, but not everytime, and i dont know if it is causing the crash or is an error because it crashes.

When i say crash its reseting, like hitting the reset button on the case

I will try with a new HDD, i have one somewhere

Hi

Is it set to "automatically restart" if there's a Windows error? If it is, then de-select this option.

IE. Control Panel / system / advanced / startup & recovery "settings" and un-tick "Automatically restart".

This may then give you a bit more Info (IE. a BSOD).

Other things maybe worth checking (though probably not causing your problem... but worth eliminating).

- Check Device Manager to see if there are any problems with devices / device drivers.
- Check the IRQ's in device manager (see if graphics card sharing with say the sound card). Though I'm not sure this is much of a problem area these days with XP.

I disabled the auto reset, slightly glad to see the bsod, that may never have been said before,

i got the following error No_more_IRP_Stack_locations

currently looking into it, but if anyone knows anything about it

would be very helpful

Hi

This is starting to look very much like a driver issue to me and as the device you added/changed is the graphics card. I'd think this is a good place to start looking. I know you said earlier that you don't think it's a driver issue but that's what this sort of message seems to be saying (from what I can see). If you try a GOOGLE you can find the necessary info to help you de-bug this BSOD (if you are lucky) and in "theory" you should be able to work out which driver is causing the problem.

Not trying to insult you. But are you sure you've downloaded the correct driver for your operating system? As there are different ones depending on what OS you are using (IE. XP, or Vista). If you have got the latest, then try an earlier one.

If no luck there. Then can you get hold of another PCIe graphics card to try? If only to eliminate the graphic card itself as the problem.

Good luck.

Is there anyway to download hot fixes outside of windows update, as i cant run it, as safe mode wont let me, and it wont last in normal mode.

I have tried deleting all my drivers with guru3d driver cleaner, and it still occurs, for chipset and gpu. i'm sure i have the right drivers too,

But MS says it has a hotfix but i cant get it, not on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906866 for me anyway

i think its related to my anti virus, as if i uninstall it, i can get into windows, as i am now. Installing it seems to set me over the limit.

i used nod32 but got rid of that a few days b4 it happened, but it still restarted when using it. and have installed Comodo anti virus, but have never been able to run while using it.

i got the hotfix and that didnt seem to do much, as it just happened
