Hi guys,

[Admins - Please move to correct forum if nessesary]

I've got a web site that's I'm trying to sort the dns out for.

Lets say the domain is: mydomain.org.uk
Hosting is here: website.hostingcompany.co.uk

What A/CNAME etc records should I be adding to make the DNS point to the hosting?

My domain is with 123-reg.co.uk

Many thanks.

Your hosting should provide nameservers, usually "ns1.hostingcompany.com" and "ns2.hostingcompany.com".

Just go into your domain's company's control panel and find somewhere to enter them.

It can take up to 72 hours, but mine was done within 20 minutes.

Does your hosting not have an IP to point with some form of parking within the hosting package? This would be better, as you can just create A records pointing to the IP address.

If not go with web forwarding, as CNAME cannot point the mydomain.org.uk record to a alias.

Just change the name servers.

No

Don't bother moving your name servers away from 123-reg because 123-reg allow you full access to you DNS settings.

All you need to setup is:

It's not as difficult as everyone is making out.

How does the hosting company know where to point the domain to get to the hosting?
edit: other than, "that's what the name server does"

Get reading.

it means it won't work without the www.

I'm trying to think how you can do it in 123-reg, but at least that should get you started...

Make sure your nameservers are ns.123-reg.co.uk & ns2.123-reg.co.uk. Don't forget that changes will take 24hr to fully propagate to the rest of the internet. Also don't forget that the entry in the CNAME box needs to end with a dot. I did it wrong in the pic - fail :(
