Hi there,

The domain forwarding with 1and1 is driving me nuts.

I created on a dedicated server a domain, with an ip address that I want to forward a domain we got from 1and1 too. But it won't play ball.

I have go it to forward - but then it will lose the url and just drop to ip address, so in other words if the address is www.cookie.com it will then turn to Http://75.4.4.5 kind of address :p

Under 1and1.co.uk I have edit destination - which basically seems to be forwarding the URL as a HTTP redirect. This is obviously not right.

I have tried going to dns settings on 1and1.co.uk I have:

Primary name server
1. Secondary name server

and so on.

in my dedicated web host I am using plesk, and have the following stuff:

Host Record type Value
IP of Website / 24 PTR URL of site.com.
ftp.URL.com. CNAME URL of site.com.
mail.URL.com. A IP OF SITE
mssql.URL.com. A IP OF SITE
URL.com. NS ns2.URL.com.
URL.com. NS ns1.URL.com.
URl.com A 74.52.13.212
URL.com. MX (10) mail.URL.com.
www.URL.com. CNAME URL.com.

Anyone got any ideas?

Who is the dedicated server with? All you should have to do is to change the name servers in the 1and1 control panel and then create the domain in your plesk control panel on the target server. It may take up to 72 hours for it to forward properly though, from experience 1and1 name server changes seem to take ages.

Ok -

I followed this video I just found:

http://www.hostgator.com/tutorials/dns/1and1/changing-name-servers-via-1and1.htm

And basically put in the IP ADDRESS that I setup for the server to the URL.

IN other words:

if 1.2.3 is the IP Address I assigned to the website in plesk, in the DNS settings I have set it up as:

HOST: RECORD TYPE: VALUE
MYURL.com A 1.2.3

That should be that HOST is myurl, record type is A, and the value is 1.2.3 (which is the dedicaed IP address I assigned the website under plesk) right? O.o

If you followed that video you need the name servers for the host/server you are on. Though it sounds like what you've done it set up an cname instead. It will probably work, but you should be following the video and putting in the name servers.

I did do it right - it seems. I checked it when I got home and all seems well.

1and1 are just a lot slower updating for servers outside of their network it seems, and for some reason (which was throwing my off) it was while configuring itself aiming at a completely random webpage in our packages. I THINk everything is great now though :)

Thanks a lot for the help though dude, go to love OCUK :)

Interesting.

It seems that the DNS servers still must be caching it.

I tried it at home last night and it worked fine, and at work today it loaded after I did a ipconfig /flushdns. However on someone elses machine still no go.

Interestingly though, on one computer http://url.com works, on another it still takes it to the old website O.o I am guessing it still is playing catch up?

The DNS is has still likely not fully proliferated yet, patience is a virtue especially with 1and1.

Was there a particular reason you went with a windows system, I wouldn't usually go for windows unless I needed something in particular like asp.

Yeah, there was :p

Remote desktop, and we are using it as a dedicated server to run an application that requires windows (for web purposes) because it uses IIS and other MS things.
