help with download

I trying to download an excel file, but once I click the link my browser opens it up as a webpage rather than downloading it.

I have chrome and firefox.

Wrong section?

The person who's sent you the link might have turned the do not allow download option on so you can only view it online.

You might have accidently set the browser to always open that file type, and may need to go into file associations/preferences in windows to get it to open in the correct program.
I'll move this to Windows as it seems more a general software issue than html etc.
