Hi Guys, I want to build a general purpose server for my living room. It needs to be relatively discrete, quiet, and capable of using a tv (hdmi) as a screen.
Would really appreciate a check on the following and any suggestions. Thanks OCUK.

Hi,

If you enable smart fan control it will be fairly quiet unless you are working it hard though it won't be silent as it will need to use smallish fans due to space constraints.

Power wise I'd expect around 100W on average as you have a seperate GPU. For match book calculations 1W 24/7/365 cost about £1 so £100 per year in electric.

For a server you might want to look at a bigger hard disk or a pair in Raid 1 if the shuttle supports / can physically hold two discs.

Back to the GPU. The 4670 is only a little more expensive and a far more capable all rounder. Just make sure you get a single slot version or it may not phsically fit in the shuttle.

Thanks. I you are definitely right about the hard drive and I tend to agree with the gfx advice since even though I don't plan on using it for games I may want to in future. Replaced those items with.

Unfortunately the shuttle only supports 1 hard drive so raid is out of the question. Will I also need to get thermal cream to seat the cpu? Are there any other odds and sods I will need to get this thing running. I already have an os.

You should have everything you need to get up and running. The shuttle should come with a thermal pad or paste but it's will worth picking some up incase it doesn't sit quite right on the first assembly.

It will come with all the cables and connectors ready to assemble as many of them are pre-routed.

The shuttle will take 2 x 3.5" drives should you want to expand. One sits below the 5.25 coved by the front panel and the other in an internal game. Most people though like to put a 3.5" memory card reader in the front 3.5 bay so they have access to camera cards etc.

another option is a seperate usb drive and just copy all your important files periodically as raid is never a backup solution.
