Need a bit of advice regarding an advert, I've only ever sold one car before and it was to a mate.

I've gone for the following so far:

I am selling my R5GTT after 5 ½ years of ownership. Most of that time it has sadly just sat in the garage as I lost interest in it but it is now up and running.

1989 F reg Phase 2 in black with sunroof
108k miles
MOT until Feb 2011
Tax until July 2010

CAT 1 alarm
CAT 2 immobiliser

New tyres all round

Service stamps in the booklet until 70k (1995) and a folder full of receipts for everything after.

Engine
Recently run on an RR it put out 125bhp but wasn’t holding boost at higher revs so it’s now running standard boost via the actuator (had a bleed valve fitted but this was causing problems and the car wasn’t holding boost, so it was removed).
Standard carburettor (jets etc).
Unsure of the turbo, it appears to have a slightly bigger than normal housing.
Strapped and flowed OEM intercooler .
Lightened and balanced flywheel.
Cone air filter.
GT Tuning carb elbow.
GT Tuning downpipe.
Magnex exhaust.
Red Samco boost hoses.
New radiator fitted about 3k miles ago.
New starter motor fitted around 1k miles ago.
New brake master cylinder less than 1k miles ago.
New spark plugs fitted less than 1k miles ago.

Transmission
Volvo 440 turbo clutch.
Gearbox fitted from a car with approx 60k miles.

Suspension and brakes
It’s lowered about 30mm all round but unsure exactly how much.
I believe the rear left shock absorber is a bit dead because it makes sounds when going over bumps.
Refurbished front brakes with rears just rubber outer casing changed, still have the rest of the refurb kit which I will throw in with the car. All new bleed screws too.
Brakes are a little spongy at the moment which is partly due to the brake fluid reservoir seal being a bit poor so I’ve ordered a new one. Brakes are also sticking a bit which I guess is down to lack of use.
New handbrake cables fitted less than 1k miles ago.
New steering U/J fitted as there was a lot of play in the steering wheel, this eliminated some of the play but there is still some slack present.

Interior
Standard interior, the driver’s seat has a couple of tears and the passenger seat has a little hole, although I’d say it’s in good condition for its age.

Exterior
For the last MOT it needed the battery tray cut out and some holes in both sills plated and welded.
There is some rust around the aerial and under the rear driver’s side window.
New unpainted front bumper (fog lights fitted but not currently wired up as there are no wires, I’m told you can buy that part of the loom though).
New unpainted grille.
Bonnet needs a respray.

Parts included with the car
Carb service kit (minus one gasket that I recently fitted to the carb)
New wishbone poly bushes
New unopened goodridge brake hose set
New water pump
New clutch cable
Second hand throttle cable

I have also placed an order with R5GTT parts for radiator cowling/ducting and a new brake reservoir cap and seal.

Trying to be as honest as I can because I'd rather people know as much as possible about the car before coming to look.

Any further questions, please ask.

It's the first draft and not 100% finished, going to go through receipts etc and make sure I have not missed anything out and that all my dates are correct.

I want to put the car up for sale asap so was thinking of putting it up today on the owners club and then editing my post as I get new parts etc, or do you think it's wise to just wait?

Have I gone in to too much detail (if such a thing is possible?)?

If i were you i would lose all the "i thinks" and the negatives, then just explain it on the phone to any callers.

Hmm I've edited is slightly, any better?

Wasn't sure whether to put things that I'm not sure about into the ad or not.

Lose the "lost mot floating" and the paint description, lose the speedo speal, lose the noisy shocker, take some decent photos, you want to entice people in not put them off :)

Explain the shortfalls on the phone, but you do want to at least get them on the phone so they can hear your enthusiasm.

I was thinking that, but then I don't want people to come and look at the car then say oooh XYZ is missing or is not right.

Edit - better?

Well that is actually the truth, we need the garage back. I just wasn't sure if I should put up a reason for sale?

Also in the ad I shall add that the car is known by a couple of well known members in the club so they can vouch for it.

I don't really want to sell if after all this time but it has to go. :(

Thanks for all the help btw chaps. :)

If you like, and you've got the time, I'll cast my eye over it some time tomorrow - I'm in Derbyshire in the morning but will be back after one and around all evening, could do some alterations for you :)

That would be grand. I did search for posts by you (remember reading that somebody copied your format) and found your 5 series advert. :)

Also, I wasn't sure whether to be a bit more descriptive and add things like "Engine drives very smoothly, comes on boost well and holds" etc?

Any chance you could look at mine too and help with my ad? Only had 3 calls after a month in Autotrader :(

Try something like this - you'll have to proof-read it as I've taken some creative liberties and they may not be true, so check through and amend anything that isn't the case :)

For sale today is my Renault 5 GTT, which I have owned for over 5 years. I took it on as a project and over that time have brought the car up to a running state, with current MOT and tax - but due to time restraints I no longer am in a position to finish it and consequently would like to sell it on to someone to use, enjoy and further improve.

The car is a 1989 F-registration Phase 2, in black, with a sunroof, and has covered a relatively low 108,000 miles. It has a current MOT until Feburary 2011 and tax until July 2010. The Renault also benefits from having a CAT 1 alarm, CAT 2 immobiliser, new tyres all round and more.

With regards to history, the Renault has service stamps in the booklet until 70,0000 miles (1995) and a folder full of receipts for everything after.

Mechanical:

The GTT was recently run on an rolling road where it put out 125bhp - and at the time wasn’t holding boost at higher due to a faulty bleed valve, so it is now running standard boost via the factory actuator for reliability and driveability's sake.

The car has:
- Standard carburettor and jetting.
- What appears to be an aftermarket turbocharger due to a larger than OEM housing.
- Strapped and flowed OEM intercooler.
- Lightened and balanced flywheel.
- Cone air filter.
- GT Tuning carburettor elbow.
- GT Tuning downpipe.
- Magnex exhaust.
- Red Samco boost hoses.
- New radiator fitted about 3k miles ago.
- New starter motor fitted around 1k miles ago.
- New brake master cylinder less than 1k miles ago.
- New spark plugs fitted less than 1k miles ago.
- Volvo 440 turbo clutch.
- Gearbox fitted from a car with approx 60k miles.

With regards to suspension, the car is lowered approximately 30mm all round. The suspension and bushes are all in good order although the rear left shock absorber would benefit from replacing - this, however, being a relatively inexpensive part and easy to change.

The front brakes have been refurbished, with the rears being partially done as necessary (and the rest of the remaining refurb kit is supplied). New bleed screws have been fitted all round and new handbrake cables were fitted less than a thousand miles ago. The brakes would probably benefit from bleeding and being used, as such they are not as sharp as they should be due to standing.

A new steering universal joint was fitted, removing much of the excess play from the column - there is still a little slack but after all, it is a 21 year old FWD performance Renault!

Interior:

The interior is standard and in good condition for its age, with only a few minor tears in the driver's seat and a small hole in the passenger seat. All the trim, doorcards and instrumentation are in good order and on the whole it would not take much to bring the interior up to perfect condition.

Exterior:

Considering the age of the car, it is in relatively good condition - with only some minor rust around the aerial mounting and under the rear driver's side window. For the last MOT it needed the battery tray replacing and some minor welding to both sills, which was completed to a good standard and as a result the car passed without issue.

The Renault has a new front bumper which is currently unpainted, and fog lights are fitted but no loom is present for these at the moment. The car also has a new unpainted grill. The majority of the paintwork is in good condition but the bonnet does need respraying.

Summary:

Overall this would make a great little project for someone as the majority of complex and expensive work has been done - and it is obviously a running, driving concern that can be used and enjoyed whilst undertaking the minor jobs and paintwork left to bring it up to a completed state.

The car also comes with:
- Carburettor service kit (minus one gasket that I recently fitted to the carb)
- New wishbone poly bushes
- New unopened Goodridge brake hose set
- New water pump
- New clutch cable
- Second hand throttle cable
- Radiator cowling/ducting
- New brake fluid reservoir cap and seal

I have also placed an order with R5GTT parts for radiator cowling/ducting and a new brake reservoir cap and seal.

I am trying to be as honest as I can because I'd rather you know as much as possible about the car before coming to look - but if you do have any further questions or queries, please don't hesitate to ask.

Wow - info overload! Your selling a 22 year old Renault 5 not a Bentley! Don't need anywhere near as much information.

Yea you do, you need as much as possible! That's what'll set it apart from other similar cars :)

Anyway, that's like only what, one side of A4 in length? That's nothing! :D

This isn't your run of the mill daily hatchback, this is effectively as near as makes no difference a classic performance car and you can't just advertise it as 'R5 GTT, MOT & tax, needs some work' etc if you want anything regarding sensible money for it :)

Serious buyers for these kind of things need all the information they can get, especially if it's been modified, to assess the vehicle and work out whether it's what they are looking for :)

Gotta work for those shekels!

The photographs were a bit of a fail tbh. I left the crappy Panasonic camera in auto mode after looking at the photos on the LCD display of the camera because they looked fine, I did however try one photo in a different setting which looked way too bright. Turns out that one was the best for lighting etc as you'll see below.

Hadn't had a polish in those photographs so will stick them up for now and give it a polish then stick up some more on Monday.
