Hi all,

I've decided that it's time to build a new PC, and having never done it before I was hoping for some advice. I'd be using it for gaming, and light general use, and have a budget of approx £750. Unfortunately, I need a monitor, mouse, keyboard and OS out of that budget. I'm pretty sure that the Intel I5 2500 is the way I want to go, but I doubt that I'll ever get round to overclocking it. I was thinking of something like this:

Product Name

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor 155.99

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5850 Extreme 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **OcUK Exclusive** £124.99

BenQ G2222HDL 21.5" Widescreen LED Monitor - Black £119.99

Asus P8H67-M Intel H67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Micro-ATX Motherboard - (Sandybridge) ** B3 REVISION ** £84.98

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-00599) £79.99

Coolermaster Elite 430 Windowed Case - Black (with 500w Elite Power PSU) £64.99

Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103SJ) £43.99

Kingston HyperX Blu 2GB (1x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Single Channel Kit (KHX1600C9AD3B1/2G) £20.99 x2 = £41.98

Blaze BL-6700 2.4Ghz Wireless Desktop £18.98

Samsung SH-S223C/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £16.99

Total : £767.88

I am very tempted to stretch the budget and go for the 5870 over the 5850 though. I'd really appreciate any thoughts or suggestions?

• P67 motherboard will allow you to overclock the CPU
• 2X2GB dual channel RAM kit
• Very high quality gaming mouse, better keyboard
• Win7 and 1TB Harddrive bundle

I wouldnt want to be running a more powerful card with the PSU supplied with this case, this spec is about all I would trust it with.

Excellent, I don't feel like I'm missing out now :)

I know the Western Digital hard drive comes in the bundle, but is it better quality/speed than the Samsung?

Cheers again

You wont notice the difference in speed between the two drives.

The main thing was getting you away from that awful Blaze keyboard and mouse.

Yep, agreed about the mouse and keyboard. Was looking for something just to tide me over until my birthday, but I like the look of those you picked :D

Certainly no need to have to replace the MX518 its a proper gaming mouse, and logitechs customer support is second to none.

Which I5 2500k should I opt for?

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor -£164.99

or the Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM - £149.99 which is on offer?

And what's the difference?

The Retail CPU comes with a Intel stock heatsink, fancy box, longer warranty.

The OEM is just the chip, 1 year warranty, so will need an aftermarket heatsink.

You want the retail CPU, as it includes a cooler with some thermal paste applied to the bottom.

I can tell that, and from seeing the amount of help you hand out! I'll stop overthinking it and accept your recommendations! It's massively appreciated.

Time to spend that paycheck :D

Is it just the one that I'll need?

The motherboard will have at least one, it may even have the two you need (DVD and HDD drive) but you dont want to be walking down to the local shop when you realise your one short on delivery day.

The other piece of advise so you dont panic, the 5850 card will need two 6pin PCI-E power connectors stuck in it.

The PSU only has one, but dont worry because in the box the 5850 comes in will be one of theses,

it converts a 4pin molex to the other 6pin the card will want.
