Help with HD 6570 Purchase

I paid best part of £1000 2.5 years ago for a company to build me a desktop for gaming/movies etc.

I confess I'm fully literate in computers with regards to overclocking etc but I'm confident that I know something isn't adding up.

I decided to try a little upgrade however I don't have a lot of time for gaming with work and I already have a PS3 360 which gives me some gaming time.......long story short I purchased the below card from OCUK

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-278-SP

Uninstalled the old card, put this HD 6570 in but thought I noticed a performance drop. So messed around all afternoon and eventually tried 3dMark06 and got some confusing results.

Old card was a HD 4850 and scored 10347 and the new card HD 6570 scored 7805. :confused: Am I missing something??? I know the 6570 is far from high end but surely it should still perform better than a card from 2.5 years ago?

I got the latest drivers etc......everyting else appears to be to up to date so I come here in need of advice?

You are a victim of (deliberate) model number confusion

The first number is the product generation, the second the level within the generation and the third/fourth the performance within that group

4850
6570

Your 4850 is the better card, by quite a bit

4850 = 800 stream processors @ 625Mhz

6570 = 480 stream processors @ 650Mhz

Easy win for the 4850...

As a reference point the HD6750 would be similar in performance to the 4850

6750 = 720 stream processors @ 700Mhz

As a very rough guide stream processors x clock speed will give you a performance metric to give you an indication of performance improvement to expect.

Hmmmmmmm way over my head:eek: but it seems I have made a school boy error :(:(

That was going to be my next question, is being a hardware noob reason enough to return the item to OCUK and request a refund?

I'm guessing DSR is an acronym for something similar?

From my memory I have a quad core 2.6, 4 gig of ram......hyundai 22 inch monitor.

Return the 6570 under DSR. What is the rest of your system inc. screen size?

+1

So long as you bought the card in the last 7 working days then you can notify the company you are returning the card under the Distance Selling Regulations and even if it is used they are obliged to give you a full refund - so long as it is packaged and posted with enough protection to get it back to them without damage (though you usually pay the delivery price to return it to them).

If you want an upgrade from a HD 4850 then I would suggest going for a HD 6850 or GTX 460 1GB. Both of these cards perform on the same level and cost around £100. Either of these cards would provide a significant performance boost over a HD 4850.

Distance Selling Regulations. You aren't happy with the product, so you have a right to return for refund/part exchange for a better model

Is that a Q6600 you're using?

For clarification you have to give notification that you wish to return the card within 7 working days from the day after it was delivered.

You then have something like 21 days to actually return the card.

Under the Distance Selling Regulations (2000) you have the right to cancel the contract relating to your order at any time up to the end of 7 working days after the goods are delivered. To exercise your right of cancellation, you must give written notice to Overclockers UK by letter, fax or RMA WebNote giving details of the goods ordered and date received. Notification by phone is not acceptable. If you exercise your right of cancellation under the Distance Selling Regulations (2000) after the goods have been delivered to you, you will be responsible for returning the goods to Overclockers UK at your own cost. The Distance Selling Regulations (2000) places a duty on you to take reasonable care of the goods once you have exercised your right to cancel. Returned items must be packaged properly and shipped in a plain outer box. Please try to include all internal packaging, cables, manuals, drivers and protective bags, however small. Overclockers UK will refund you within 30 days for any sum that has been paid by you or debited from your credit or debit card for the goods. If after exercising your right under the Distance Selling Regulations (2000) you do not return the goods as required, Overclockers UK may charge you a sum not exceeding the direct costs of recovering the goods. When exercising your right to cancel under the Distance Selling Regulations (2000) please return goods to Overclockers UK (Esnet Ltd), 4 Axis, Millenium way, High Carr Business Park, Newcastle-under-lyme, ST5 7UF.

Not 100% on the mb as am on the ipad at the moment.

Didn't think I would have to spend 100 pounds to upgrade such an old machine!!

Will try and return the card and just settle with what I have. The only gfx intensive game I was hoping to play was ARMA 2. BF3 takes most of my time so don't think I could justify much over the 60 quid I spent originally for only a couple of hours gaming a week, shame as I thought I was being smart and slowly upgrade the machine to a gaming monster for relatively cheap:mad:

TBF £100 GPUs offer huge bang for buck, this PC gaming lark has never been cheap :p

How about a second hand card? You should be able to get a decent GPU in the 50-60 quid region, but the warranty might be an issue

Many thanks for everyone's answers.....standard of replies are far superior here than in GD where I normally read:D

Only problem now is you guys have planted the seed of going for a card for around the 100 mark and at least i have a better idea of what I should be looking for.
