Help with HDMI capture (AverMedia)

I have a C127 capture card, and both Aver Mediacenter and RECentral appear to suck. Neither offer me the option to record AVIs using a code like Lagarith (even though its installed on my system), they only let me select uncompressed, and generally they just seem a bit rubbish.

Can I ditch their software and use something else to capture reliably, using my choice of codec?
