This is a re-write of the original problem. Just for clarity.
Two machines, one router, one cable internet.
Machine 1: Laptop connecting wireless
Machine 2: Desktop wired connection
Machine 2 was hosting a MsnMessenger Service for Machine 1. This was being run through an "internet gateway" on the Network Connections configuration page on machine 2. Disconnecting the "internet gateway" would prevent any further internet access on machine 1. Any application or website currently loading would continue to have access, and new web page or net application would fail to connect. All internet access on machine 2 would cease despite "High Speed Internet" connection still being active and connected via Ethernet. CMD>IPCONFIG would give valid IP address.
Unable to delete Internet Gateway. Machine 1+2 would regularly lose connections.
