Hello overclockers,
I've had this chip for over a week now and whilst its very easy to overclock, I am finding it difficult to get stable in long prime95 tests. Also, I think that I have a heat issue. Here's the setup:
i7 920 @ 3.8Ghz
19 X 200
Core volt 1.29375
CPU PLL 1.81592
QPI/DRAM 1.31250
UCLK 3208Mhz
QPI 7218MT/s
DRAM volt 1.65681
12GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 1600 8-8-8-24 1N
Noctura NH-U12 SE1366
Silverstone Fortress FT01 case
Asus Rampage II Extreme
With this config at 3.8Ghz and idle, my temps are 48-45-46-44. I know that the i7's are hotter than most chips but this does seem to be a little hotter than norm. At 1.29375 core volts this will ramp up to around 85-90 at load with prime95
(blend test). Ambient temps are around 25.
I have reseated the heatsink 4 times and tried AS5 and the Noctua paste, it makes no noticeable difference whichever paste I use or the method of application, i.e. rice sized or spread out over the chip.
Although I can boot this system upto 4.2Ghz I have to up the voltage to levels that generate too much heat and will hit over 90 at load.
The case has two intake 180mm fans running about 700RPM, a 120mm exhaust fan about 1100 RPM and the Noctua is push pull about 1300RPM.
There is an XFX GTX 280 video card in the case with stock cooling, although I cannot see the fans - somewhere in the card casing I think. This card runs at 52 at idle.
So I've tried everything I can to keep temps reasonable with equipment that I believed should do the job.
Any thoughts?
TIA
