Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help.

I am still running AGP graphics and have a 9800 Pro which has been running fine for ages. I recently bought a second hand Asus AX800XT Platinum Edition as a last upgrade on AGP.

I uninstalled the drivers on the old 9800 Pro and then installed the new card as normal. The problem I am having is with installing the drivers.

I tried the latest ATI drivers and once they are installed the system asks to be rebooted. On reboot all I get is a continuous loop. Windows never actually boots and it just goes round in circles and back to the bios memory check etc screen.

I tried different drivers and even the latest from Asus. Some drivers install ok but sometimes I will get a black screen with a cursor in the top left of the screen. The only way out is for me to press the reset button.

Once the drivers are installed and the PC is restarted I then get a message saying the device cannot start because no ATI driver is installed. I checked the device manager and I am getting different error codes. These codes are 1, 10 and 28.

All refer to the driver not being installed. I uninstalled the drivers and then tried a manual install from add new hardware in the control panel. I managed to get the card working and everything is fine in the device manager until I reboot my PC.

On reboot the problems start all over again from the continuous loop to the black screen and the error codes.

So far I have tried the lastest and older ATI/Asus drivers but all give the same problems.

I have reset the bios config incase of a conflict. I have even re-installed Windows.

I am using the PC fine at the moment but as soon as I restart I will have to manually install the drivers again. Basically I have to install the drivers each time I want to use my PC.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Dan

Different AGP slots, depending on their age, use different voltages. That's the only reason I can think of that this would be happening.

Could you possibly let us know what the exact make and model number your motherboard is? It would help a lot. :)

Driver cleaner all ATI Drivers. Then install latest 6.7 drivers without CCC.

IF that doesn't work try a wipe of windows and start again.

If that doesn't work its borked :(

Hi,

Thanks for your help.

It's an AGP 4X slot. The manual says it will work in AGP 2, 4 and 8X slots.

I tried wiping Windows but still have the same problems. I don't think the card is borked as I am using it now and the drivers are installed. When I reboot the drivers will have gone and the device manager will show error codes again.

My power supply is a 680w so no problem there. There is nothing conflicting and my 9800 Pro works fine when I put it back in.

I'm thinking that my PC just doesnt like it.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

I tried installing just the drivers and managed to have a couple of hours gaming. All seems fine until I reboot. My PC will go through the bios memory check etc and then get to the Windows loading screen with the bar. The bar then dissapears and then I am back at the bios check screen.

It will just keep doing this over and over until I switch it off.

I then start the PC on last known good configuration and the wizard then says found new hardware X800XT Platinum Edition. I install the drivers again and restart and get the same all over again.

I'm just going around in circles. I know the card is fine as I have played games with it before rebooting and everything ran great.

Ok my system isnt that modern and is running dual AMD MP 2400+ and 2.5GB memory. The minimum specs say 800MHz and 128MB. I more than exceed the minimum so can't understand whats wrong.

I have formatted and re-installed Windows and still get the same problem. I see know reason why it will not run when my 9800 pro will run no problem.

Anyway it looks like I will be going back to the 9800 pro and getting rid of the X800XT and then start saving and build a new Conroe system.

Thanks for your help.

I have tired older drivers but seem to be having the same problems.

I have just managed to install the lastest drivers from ASUS without the control panel. Whenever I boot my PC the primary display adaptor has an error saying code 10.

I uninstall the graphics card and then goto add new hardware. The card is identified correctly and then I am able to install the correct driver and all is working fine and the device manager shows no errors.

However when I next boot my PC the primary graphics has dropped the drivers and displays error code 10 again. I have to install the drivers everytime my PC boots.

I just can't seem to get the drivers to stick.

This is the first I have ever heard of drivers failing on rebooting, I'm afraid, so I would have absolutely no idea of what to do in that situation other than trying Omega drivers or something instead of ATI's official ones.

Hopefully someone who has experienced this problem first-hand, or at least knows how to fix it for sure, will come along with some better advice.

Hi,

Thanks for your help.

I have tried ATI, Asus and Omega drivers and all are giving me the same problems. I have now put my 9800 Pro back in and everything is fine.

I will try the X800XT PE in another PC and see how it goes. I know the card is fine as I have had it running. It's something funny with my PC.

Eventually I will build a new PC so will be rid of AGP.
