Hey all, i Have got This specs pc..

Amd sempron 3400+
768mb ram
2x80gb hd IDE
1xDVD Burner.

Anyway. I want to turn it into a server. I want to run a program called Webmin on it and also be able to run websites. I would also like to use it as a backup place for at my home.

Can you lot suggest what version i try. And basicly how i do it. .

Thanks Phil

While i've never used it personally, I belive Centos is highly regarded and one of the very best server linux distros...

If I were you and I was new to Linux I would choose a distro that installed a GUI by default. It will probably make the learning curve a lot less steep.

I recommend Ubuntu for its ease of use and its popularity. Popular distros tend to make it easier because most every problem you might have will have already been encountered by somebody else and there's already a solution to be found on the Googles. You can use the 32-bit or the 64-bit version (if you've got a 64-bit processor).

I have jumped in and i am using debian, 3.1

I am trying to get it to work with my sweex 10/100 card. Its LA00040 or somthing like that. there is linux drivers but how do i go about installing them..

I'd go for SUSE10,

I tried Debian (Didn't detect my NIC) and Ubuntu (which was just annoying to be honest).

SUSE has been excellent, I've been without windows for about a week and there's nothing I've missed so far.

I dont know becuase I've never used SUSE, but is it really suited towards the server market? I know it's Novell's Linux solution but that version you have to pay for (like RH and Fedora). Just wondering if the free version was up for the server side of things.

Personally I would use OpenBSD because of the tight security it has. Although I have only had exprence with NetBSD (I just heard it had better security). Debian is a good choice tho.

Debian is a good choice, but can be tricky to configure if you're a newbie. You could try Mepis, which is based on Debian but is slimmed down and more user friendly. This article explains how to get webmin working under Mepis.

Thats really good.. This sounds good. I am going to try it tomorrow.

I want to use it to share a hardrive i have as a network drive i hear i need "samba" for that. Possible a print server but its not important. I then want to use a program i can't what its called but it allows me to point a domain i have at it even though i have a dymanic ip. And then lastly i want to run a torrentflux website from it. So i can manage torrents from my PDA ect. What do you lot think to all this?

Getting on OK?

I use my home server for a few similar things, including the network share (with Samba) and run torrentflux too. To run torrentflux you will need a web server (I use apache) and a mysql database. Samba can share printers, or cups is more advanced print server.

All eminently do-able, my server is running CentOS with is the free version of Red Hat's enterprise line, but any major distro should be fine :).

I gave up with having a server at all. I now have one in DC! thats where i will host my sites from. I am running centos and cpanel.. I am slowly learning for linux on virtual machines using vmware and centos!

Thanks all

Hw do you guys rate SME server 7.1 for doing something similar to the above? It seems pretty decent from the looks of it and is based on CentOS 4.4. I have downloaded CentOS 4.4 too, just in case it all goes pear shaped.

Windows Server 2003 is too costly and being windows somethings are just too rigid in the way it wants to run for my liking.

SME Server is pretty solid. There's another one which caught my eye recenty, that I haven't checked out yet. It's called something like Wolverine. Anybody heard of it?

Check out SLAMMP. That should do the trick nicely. I find Slax based distros run faster than their Debian counterparts. :)
