my m8 is looking to build his own pc he's a student so budget is tight he has £300max to spend but he doesn't need a case(2fans), keyboard, monitor, HDD, optical drive or OS

heres what he's looking to get so far -

ASUS M2N-E SLI - Mobo AM2 socket
AMD ATHLON 64 X2 4200+ 4.4 GHZ 1MB CACHE AM2 DUAL CORE - CPU
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz x2
PSU - Magna ATX 500W (already owned)
Gainward bliss 8800GT 512mb
logitech mx518

he also wants to overclock so will need a cooler

so can you guys help he out?

Is there a reason why he wants to go down the AMD route?

What is the pc used for?

Is the OS 64 or 32 bit?

he hasnt got lots to spend so i think he's trying to save money where he can tbh but he be happy with what will work

he's going with vista x64

the pc will be used for courseworkweb browseing and games (CoD4)

Swap out the AMD mainboard and CPU for Intel....

The E2xxx series will be fine, overclocks nicely to 3Ghz+ and is faster clock for clock than an AMD. Mainboards can be had for a simliar price, P35 is a fairly safe bet.

If you stick with AMD you won't get the best out of the card.
