help with memory..

i have a mate with an old e machines computer..

its runs 256mb of ram i one slot with a few second slot..

can i install a 1gb stick of ram in the second slot as well as the 256mb thats in there on do i need to remove the 256mb as they won't be matched..

until he buys another stick of 1gb ram...in a couple of months maybe..

also why does it seem so expensive..it costs 80 for 2gb of ddr where i can get 8gb of ddr2 for the same money..
