Hi guys. My dad's hp desktop has died and I've said I will build him a replacement. I don't know much about small form factor so I was hoping some of the experts here could help me out. It's for general office and browsing/streaming video. He does use a basic music composition tool but I don't know what it is. It needs 4usb+ and wifi.

So far I've chosen this case:

This ssd (probably doesn't need much bigger hd unless there's value to be had)

So I'm left with mobo, CPU, cooler? (Or is stock ok?), psu, ram, wifi card. I'm also assuming onboard graphics but would a cheap passive card make sense?

Budget is max £400, closer to £300 would be better. Big ask I know.

I've noticed the NUC but haven't a clue about it. Does it have enough USB support and wifi? Feels like sticking to standardised components is a better idea long term.

Thanks a lot in advance.

I have to admit, and I hate doing so as I'm never a fan of pre-built PCs (I like putting them together myself) but in your position I'd just consider one of the OcUK pre-built office PCs like the Primo Pro AX.

Even with an SSD and a wireless card specced it's less than £250. I think you'd struggle to get close to that with the components, and it comes with a 2yr warranty. :)

Wasn't expecting that. :) Timeframe is likely to be an issue with that was I was hoping to order tomorrow, build on Friday and take it to him on Saturday (it's a long way and we don't meet all that often).

Okay, well I'm still thinking something barebones is the way to go here as it's going to be small and light.

How about a Sapphire EDGE VS4 miniPC, the SSD above, and one of the Corsair 4GB DDR3 SO-DIMMs?

That'll put you a shade over £330.

[Edit] If for you, Intel > AMD then swap the VS4 for a Gigabyte BRIX of similar price instead.

Cheers Subby mate. As usual, I hit my top budget and a little bit more :)

Think I got a decent boost for the extra cash though. I'll couple the SSD with his current hdd.

Thanks for you input :)
