I decided to join in this wonderful world of folding, to give my computer something to do while it was missing me.

I followed your setup guide and currently have a working SMP. 4kppd(i dont know if that's good?)

However i cannot get my msi7850 to run. keeps giving me

[23:36:11] + Couldn't get work instructions.
[23:36:11] - Attempt #x to get work failed, and no other work to do.
Waiting before retry.

Ive tried googling to no avail.

I updated the GPU.txt.
Im currently using the F@H GPU tracker V2 as recommended for beginners.

I have also tried the client direct from F@H website with no luck.

has anyone got any ideas?

I think the 7 series are dog poo for folding. to the point of it being counterproductive to your smp cpu ppd.. You're better off downloading BOINC and folding Seti@home or Milkyway@home to get the most out of your beefy 7870.

Firstly, welcome to the team!

Good news is it has Double Precision floating point so its good for Milkyway, bad news is unfortunately the 78xx range has only 1/16 the Double Precision floating point performance of its Single precision, meaning that it has peformance somewhere between a 4770 and a 4830.

To give you an idea of the performance and A 5870 or 6950 completes a WU in just over a minute, a 7950 in around 45 seconds whereas a 7870 would do one in around 4-5 mins.

Its just the way the cards are designed. Seti should be ok, although nvidia really holds the performance crown over there.

AMD GPUs run quite well on Collatz Conjecture and it only requires single precision so your card would do much better there than on Milkyway :) I'm sure there are some other BOINC projects supporting single precision AMD cards, but can't think of them right now :o
