Help with Netgear 834DG as a router

I was previously using this as a modem/router.

I now have a cable modem and just want to use it as a router.

What cables/settings do I need? Just plugging the new modem into port 1 and the PC into port 2 doesn't work.

Also my PC has two ethernet ports, could I skip the router altogether and network up the other device from the second port?

(second device is a streaming network player that needs to access internet and files on the pc)

It's an ADSL modem/router, you have no way to connect a Cable modem to the wan port, what you need is a dedicated router with an RJ45 (Ethernet) WAN port.
