Hi all!

A friend of mine has decided he wants a new rig, and I need a little help selecting components for him.

He's a 'heavy' gamer, has a 1920x1080 monitor (60Hz), and primarily plays games such as Ark, World of Tanks, World of Warships and Total War. His old PC was built in 2011 and has an i5 2400 stock, 8Gb of 1333MHz Ram, but we recently put a Palit GTX 970 in. He'd like to keep the graphics card for the new build, but the rest of the system could use replacing. It's noisy, sluggish and the power supply is on its way out.

I have put together a list of components below, and I'd be very grateful if you could assist me. Would the components work together, is an i7 necessary, which CPU cooler should we get (air cooled), and could we save any money with alternatives etc?

A i5 is more than enough for gaming. You don't really need 16Gb either but it's cheap at the moment so I added a faster kit in.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - OEM £173.99
1 x Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-Bit DVD - OEM (WN7-00614) £79.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Savage Red 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (HX324C11SRK2/16) £79.99
1 x Gigabyte Z97M-DS3H Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £77.99
1 x Samsung 250GB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive (MZ-75E250B/EU) £77.99
1 x EVGA Supernova GS 550W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £64.99
1 x Samsung SH-224FB/BEBE 24x DVDRW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM M disc compatible £14.99
1 x TP-Link 300Mbps Wireless N PCI Express Adapter (TL-WN881ND) £14.99
Total : £594.52 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

The PSU is a fully modular unit built by Seasonic for EVGA and has a 5 year warranty. 550w is enough for just about any single gpu system even with overclocking and your mates GTX970 is incredibly power efficient. Cases are personal preference so I will leave that up to you. The Phanteks cases are well worth considering though.
