Help with new build please

I wonder if anyone can help me. I've recently bought a few bits for an upgade:

Pentium D 805
Asus P5P800
ATX 20pin to 24pin converter

I have been hoping to keep my X850XTPE, Ballistix and Enermax 460w PSU with this new gear but when I set this up I get nothing. It shows power on the mobo and everything spins up correctly but no monitor signal or beeps. It will eventually spin down again.

I have tried resetting the bios and moving the ram around, I even tried using some old ddr33 to no avail.

The thought occurs that I should have plugged the speakers in before I rebuild the old machine, because I understand the Asus boards run there errors through there.

My other worry is that it's just this 20-24pin converter is rubbish?

I should also point out that I have not build a 775 system before, are there any pitfalls I should be away of?

Any help much appreciated.

xirokx mate, the PSU adapter is the other way round, old (but still pretty good) PSU with modern mobo.

No onboard Graphics

Yep, eventually powers down, I guess after it has told me whats rwrong through the speaker a couple of times.

All my other gear is socket 754 so I can't really fault find with it. I'll have to put it together again and plug some speakers in. Kicking myself really as I should have though to do that anyway.

Any socket 775 pitfalls I should know about?

p5p800 (non se) doesnt support dual core iirc

I think you've hit the nail on the head mate. I noticed that on the Asus web site that the SE supports dual core and that the non SE has no mention but I thought that was an oversight as they both use the same chipset 865PE.

Having bought a chip and mobo that are incompatable must make me the most experience n00b ever

Anyone wanna but a P5P800? lol, no didn't think so.

If you know of anyone selling a P5P800SE could you guys let me know?
