Hi folks,

Im new on these Forums (So be nice :)) and was wondering you you guys could help me out with some quick questions regarding my new PC from Overclockers?

Im an old school pc enthusiast, yet after my last major build (6 years ago) my pc which was amazing at the time... has been absolutely pants for the past 2 years. I then (after some peer pressure and bullying from friends) against my better judgement got myself an xbox 360. Which was great at the time.... but I missed pc gaming, and all the extras and benefits the platform offers.

So.... after much deliberation I ordered myself the Ultima Eliminator package from overclockers. Being out of touch with new hardware I wasnt up to the challenge of building the pc from scratch... so took the easy (lazy) option of opting for a pakage deal. (where did AGP go?) :)

Ive also never dabbled with overclocking, yet it has always been of interest to me, so again, I took the easy option as this package is pre setup and overclocked to 4ghz. and this is where my questions arise (sorry for the life story).

1. In honesty ive just been in awe of the computer and ive been generally too scared to change settings / tamper with things to much just incase I do something wrong. Is there any way I can tell that the cpu is overclocked to 4ghz? when im in windows everything I can find just tells me the cpu is an intel i7 920 at 2.66.

2. The memory that comes with the package is 6gig of 1600 Ram, yet on the system startup (the first bios screen) it detects 6gig of ram running at 1066. Should this not be 1600?

3. Ive installed windows 7 (perhaps a mistake), the latest nvidia drivers for the geforce 295, the motherboard drivers from the gigabyte ud5 CD (some applications didnt work with windows 7). is there any other software / applications / tools I can install to make sure I am getting the most out of the new PC. Not that I doubt overclockers machine in any way, its just that I feel like a lay man all over again as I am out of touch so much. Anything that could help would be greatly appreciated!

The key components of the machine are:

:- Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz Overclocked to 4.00GHz!
:- 6GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600MHz Tri-Channel RAM
:- 1TB Seagate 7200RPM Hard Drive
:- Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 1792MB Graphics Card

Any and all help / info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again for your time.

1.) There's a little app called CPUZ which will give you all the information you need on your CPU clocks, if you do a search you'll be able to download it. More than likely though you'll find that CPU-Z reports even lower clocks than stock. OcUK put in a nice feature in which your CPU will use lower clock when idle, usally x12 Multiplier at 200mhz (around 2.2GHZ). When under load however, such as game it'll change the clock speed up to x20 and you'll get your 4GHZ. It's a handy feature which saves power and only uses the overclock when it's needed.

2. Check BIOS (hit delete to enter BIOS) and go into MB Intelligence Tweaker. In here you can see what your RAM is clocked at, at the very bottom.

3. I'd get apps such as (These should work on Windows 7, make sure you Right Click > Properties > Compatability and Select Windows Vista when installing from the .exe):

FIREFOX :P

Comodo Firewall (Free)
Avast! Home edition (Free)
CCleaner (Free)
MalwareBytes Anti-Spyware (Free)
Avira Anti Virus (Alternative, Free)
CPUZ (Free)
CoreTemp (Free)

If you ever want to get back into overclocking, you can try out:

RivaTuner (GPU Overclock)
Nvidia's Performance (GPU Overlock)

You could test your system out with:

3DMark 06
3DMark Vantage

I'll edit the post if I can think of anymore, it's friday and I want to go home!

An easy way to check if you are at 4Ghz would be to run Prime95 in blend mode, then run CPU-Z at the same time. The clock speed will show in the first window.

On the tabs in CPU-Z there is one for memory. Click on that, and you should see your memory speed (DRAM Frequency)... It should say around 798 - 800 Mhz...

Link to the apps you need: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17757620

Overall I wouldn't be scared of your new bit of kit - Play around so you get used to it (I imagine that OC have put a profile in the BIOS to reset it to 4Ghz should anything go wrong)...
