Hi guys just bought a new router to connect to the modem. My laptop can receive signal from the router and can connect to it. But when connected to it it says local only and unable to surf the net. Any idea?

I'll go for a guess and say cable as he said he's connecting the router to the modem, in which case turn off the modem and turn it back on again.

Already did this and still doesn't work. Still having limited connectivity.

Power off the modem for at least 30 seconds (VM advise 2 minutes), then power it back on, wait for the lights to settle, then connect your router. Check the WAN interface on your router has been assigned a valid IP address (not 169.x).

Yea mate, I checked the WAN interface and its I.P. is the default 192.168.1.1

I have turned off the modem for 5 minutes but still doesn't work.

无线功能: 启用
SSID号: TP-LINK_8B1266
频 段: 6
模 式: 54Mbps (802.11g)
MAC 地址: 00-21-27-8B-12-66
IP 地址: 192.168.1.1

And its not cable btw, its DSL or ADSL, Im not too sure but it connects to the telephone socket.

1. That's the LAN interface, not WAN.
2. Advice about turning off the modem is irrelevant if you're not on cable (couldn't you have said that earlier?)
3. ..
Broadband supplier, type of modem and what router you have would help.

I am in China atm so I am not sure what supplier this is.

It connects to the telephone line so it should be ADSL.

What I need help with is probably setting of IP address to the WAN interface, any idea how you go about doing that?

Typically the WAN address is supplied via DHCP, so you don't need to set anything other than automatic. Again that's the typical scenario, might not be the case with your service though - difficult to give any decent suggestions really without any more info to go on.
