Help with oc my geil RAM

Hi all,

I am new to overclocking but am giving it ago even though i'm not totally sure i'm doing it right:confused:

Anyway i seem to have oc my CPU to 3.25ghz (8*406) and want to have a go at playing with the ram to see if i can get more for my money!!

My current set up is as follows

Asus P5KC Mobo (bios 1001)
Intel core 2 duo E6400 which is OC to 3.2Ghz (8*406)
4gig of Geil Ram PC2-6400 (400Mhz)(Black Dragon)
Gigabyte 8800GT
All in an Antec 900 with a Arctic Freezer pro 7


The ram i bought in 2 lots, first lot about 4 months ago and the second lot last week. Firstly i have attach a pic below, in the timing tables the figures are different??? In slot 1 and 3 is the first lot and in slots 2 and 4 is the second. Why are these different and is this normal or is it having an adverse effect on the performance of my puter :confused:
Also on the box it said - pc6400 800mhz but on CPU-Z it said 400mhz??

Now i have had a play with some of the setting in my bios but always seem to get the BSOD and have to revert back to the orginal settings :confused:

So what do i need to change to increase performance?? Have read about loosing/tighting timing............what does this mean/do.

My bios is version 1001 from Asus if anyone is familer with this please help with what i need to change

Double Data Rate so the 400Mhz is the actual frequency with the effective speed of 800Mhz.

All 4 sticks are currently running at 5-5-5-18 which is quite loose for DDR2 and all 4 sticks are capable of doing 4-4-4-12 at default DDR2 800.

Tighter timings have better performance obviously and a good way to oc the ram is to use loose timings in order to gain higher frequency. It works for most RAM but for some doing so won't get you much more speed.

Not sure about black dragon but I've used 4 sticks of Geil ULL PC6400 (same as the black dragon spec wise) for a brief time and all 4 sticks made it to 950Mhz 5-5-5-15.

Make sure you are running enough voltage through these sticks as well. The recommended voltage is specified on the laser sticker on Geil sticks

I've got the same RAM as you, although only 2 sticks, and currently have them at 900Mhz 5-5-5-15. So hopefully yours will be able to get around this speed too.

Have had them at 940Mhz aswell with the same above timings, and they seemed okay, but I didn't really feel the need to leave them there.
 
Thanks will give that a try........did try 4-4-4-12 last night but system wouldn't boot up :confused:

Will have a look again at mhz figures and have another go......what sort of voltage would i need to give them??

Reading the Geil USA forums I've heard 2.3 on this RAM is safe. They do state that they dont support their RAM on this side of the ocean in any way. So, I dont actually know if the RAM they supply here is of a different quality, although when I bought mine from OCUK, it was specced as safe to 2.3.
BTW I've tried as high as 2.28 thru mine and it didnt help O clocking, I'm presently at 2.1v with timings at 4 4 4 12.
