My 480gtx (refurb) has arrived which I bought last week. Its connected to an Antec truepower 750watt. I removed ati drivers and the 5770 that was in my machine before. I connected it and installed the latest drivers from the nvidia site, rebooted and was presented with a black screen before the login page.

I then rebooted into safe mode, which works fine. Rebooted again and this time it managed to boot into windows but crashed as soon as i tried to load heaven benchmark.

I run 5 hard drives and a [email protected]. I turned the q6600 down to 2.8ghz and disconnected 2 drives - still no luck

Where do i go from here?

Wow.. Trying to raise your post count?

I recently got one of the refurbs. Had a 5850 before so I had to remove ATI drivers too. I'm not all that knowledgeable but I'd assume a bum card.

Try reinstalling drivers. If that doesn't work, redo Windows install. If it's all still the same, I'd RMA.

I have always found in past experiences that changing GPU from ATI to Nvidia or vice versa tends to cause problems with drivers, best cure is probably a full windows re-install im afraid.

bit excessive, try installing afterburner and upping the 480s voltage slightly.

You could also temporarily try dual booting with another OS like linux or windows xp etc. you can always remove it if it doesnt solve anything.

Running latest version of drivers and your benchmark?

Sorry to hear that mate. Ive ordered gtx480 as well - expect it by tomorrow. You got me worried now. :(

I had a revision HD6950 2GB and GTX 460 1GB and been swithing between them back and forth with no problems whatsoever. [just a simple driver uninstall - no driver sweeper]

You better try that card on another pc if you can before sending back though.

I'd like to point out that in my case, I haven't had any problems as of yet. Got my card on Friday though, so you may argue that it's still early days.

But yeah, if I was in OP's position, I'd reinstall Windows.

Ive tried reinstalling drivers, im just formatting and reinstalling win7 pro 64bit now...
Its just crashed whilst installing windows.
At 'expanding windows files'

Second attempt now. Its not looking like this card is very stable!

Managed to get windows installed.
Installed nvidia drivers once in windows, rebooted and got nothing more than a blank screen again before the login page

Have you tried the 275.33 driver? Apparently a few people have had issues with the latest driver 280.26 whql. How old is that PSU? The 480's draw some serious power and will soon show up any flaws on an old, tired/faulty PSU.

Have you ruled out memory errors? Also check cables etc are seated firmly. The expanding windows files issue doesn't point the finger at your gfx card...

Any chance you could test it in another machine?

Im just trying that driver now

Psu is about 6 months old from ocuk. Truepower 750watt

I clean install the driver install booted to a black screen before login page. A reboot and it got into windows, i then installed heaven benchmark, fired it up and got a blue screen with flashing green bit all over it. I grabbed my camera to get a picture but it rebooted automatically

Nothing needs to be changed in bios does it for higher power graphics card? Not that it ever got to anywhere near load levels

New driver (older driver) is now loaded. Booted into windows and got a black screen with corruption on briefly, then went normal agaib. Launched heaven and exited to windows- display driver stopped responding and has recovered. And cannot set video mode...

This is a clean install of win 7 with nothing on

Definately go for 275.33, 280.26 is a piece of rubbish.

Could you explain to me why? I've been ATI since forever and am brand new to Nvidia and their drivers. I would love to know how the drivers I am using are worse and if I'm losing performance or anything.

Really sorry if it seems I am hijacking the thread. It isn't intentional, just don't think it's worth creating a new thread for it.

Regarding your problem, I'd wait for someone more knowledgeable to suggest a possible remedy. I guess the only thing left then would be to RMA.

Personally I don't know the exact details of whats changed in the drivers, I don't bother reading as one would assume that newer drivers offer better performance and fixes to old issues as they are of course the new drivers.

I installed 280.26 without any issues, when I started BC2 the audio was jittery and the game virtually unplayable, my system is more than capable of running this game maxed at 1080p (i7 2600k @ 4.9 GHz & 2xGtx 570 overclocked to 950MHz.

I don't know what it is but the drivers slowed every game down and made most unplayable, other people on various forums have also reported the same issues.

But then again everyone has a different experience with the drivers, some people have no issues atall but 280.26 appear to have widespread problems (check Guru3d)

Alright, thanks for answering me that.

Whats the OcUK RMA process? Do I need to ring up?

I bought a Hazro screen at the same time and one of the main reasons for buying the screen was to use with the 480GTX at 1440p resolution (1.5gb VRAM)

Is there a possibility I can get it replaced for another 480GTX or something of similar spec?

Raise a WEB note, or better still phone them up. If you do go the RMA route (IE. return). They will send you an Email with all the details of what to do. I would suggest following this TO THE LETTER. I only mention this, as the forum has had a number of posts over the years where people don't read / follow this Email and it can hold any return up big time (EG. OCuk might not even accept the parcel if not in a brown paper box, with RMA no. written twice on the outside etc.).

As to a replacement / something else. Then I suspect this is unlikely unless you are returning it under the DSR and getting your money credited back. Though as this is a refurb card, you might get lucky.

Good luck.

PS. Have a read of http://www.overclockers.co.uk/support.php

If they eat 400 watts at load then im not suprised a 1000watt psu is dieing with 2 and an overclocked i7

...However mine crashed a number of times when just on the desktop, instantly when opening anything up like a benchmark even before it started doign anything.

Mikeo - I contacted them yesterday and was sent an RMA note and getting refund. No more 480s left in stock. Suppose I will get a 570 from ocuk when I get refunded or wait until the next wave of new cards arrive. Nothing is available for £160 that is similar performance and 1.5gb vram like the 480

...I'm also left with an issue with my 5770 now, it wont display anything until the login screen. VGA monitor works fine but my Hazro acts like its a secondary screen during post. Everything else works fine though. Strange
