This is currently on offer through overclockers

I was planning on building a system at the end of November based around an Aorus Mobo Ryzen3900 chip and RX5700 CPU.

At this point I'm going to hold my hand up and say I just don't have the tech knowledge to know what I'm doing regarding memory performance and compatibility - I was just going to go with what folk recommended. It would seem that other people doing similar builds suggested using:
VENGEANCE RGB PRO BLACK 16GB 3600 MHZ AMD RYZEN TUNED DDR4 MEMORY KIT

But is the offer memory pretty much equivalent to this? I'm happy to buy stuff just now if the offer is genuinely good but equally I don't want to rooster it up either.

So I know many of you are face-palming me right now  but I'm willing to take that hit to get things right :)

So snap up the offer just now or hang on 'cos it's not really that much of a difference...?

With 3rd gen ryzen its always best to go with the lowest possble ram timmings, speed does come into it as well and for 3rd gen ryzen 3600mhz ram speed seems to be the sweet spot

The 8 pack ram you have said has timmings of 16,16,16,36 and a speed of 3600mhz which will be a very good combo with a 3900x i should know i have that cpu and a cl18 kit of ram that i have dropped to cl16 and performance is very good in most tasks i do, plus being samsung b die means if you want this ram should overclock without changing the timmings too much, voltage will need to be for stability but if you dont want to do that just set docp in the bios and this kit will run at 3600mhz at 16,16,16,36 around 1.35v

The lpx set on the other hand has timmings of 18,22,22,42 at 3600mhz which is still a good kit but will be slower than the 8pack kit, you'll notice this in heavy cpu tasks such as cinebench r20 you may be a couple of hundread points lower due to the timmings being loose compared to the other kit, as with kit above you'll be able to set docp in the bios and this kit will run at its rated speeds, you can tighten up the timmings of this kit but you may not get down to cl16 and if you do you'll find the voltage may go upto or past 1.4v for stability this in turn would make the lpx ram rum warm if overclocked

If cost is to be considered then the corsair lpx has it hands down but if it was me i'd spend the little extra and get the 8 pack kit, the low timmings with the speed will be a very good combo with any 3rd gen ryzen.

my advice go for the 8 pack kit, i hope this helped :)

I appreciate the thorough answer - it all helps to get me more clued-up (I'm starting from a very low level of knowledge these days :-( )

Now, one final answer if you guys don't mind. Do I get 32Gb given that once I've bought this system that's it for about the next 5-10 years? Is this is a sensible future-proofing move or just massive overkill?

thanks :-D

(And once I get that info I'll either be buying 1 or 2 sticks - the system build begins!! :-D !! )

with ram capacity it will all come down to what you do, most everyday tasks and gaming will not use any more that around 12gb so if you do gaming and everyday tasks then go for a 16gb kit 2*8gb modules

On the other hand if you do lots of render work, photo editing media creation etc then 16gb wont be enough and in this case i'd opt for at least 32gb kit of ram, theres lots of controversy if you should opt for dual channel vs quad channel, i've had my 3900x with a quad channel set of 32gb dimms and ran into no issues at all, but at the end of the day it comes down to personal prefrence, i dont think theres really much diffrence between the two in all honesty, bar price 32gb (2*16gb or 4*8gb) moduels are oviosly more.

hope this helps :)

And by the time I went to buy there was none left.
Not so much snooze and you lose as not have a scoobie what you're doing and you lose :D :D :(:(

But thanks anyway!

Hi Space Monkey. From the nature of your post I take it you help run the forum or work with OCUK?
I'm looking to get a post I made in project logs shifted to general hardware - can you give me some help in how to go about doing that?
thanks :-)

Hi,

I'm a moderator for the forum, so if you give me the link I'll have a look for you :)

Hi space monkey
Not sure how to provide a direct link but if you navigate to project logs the most recent post is by me and starts 'about to build a new system'
Is that enough?
