First time owning a non Intel manufactured motherboard in over a decade so pretty confused with all these settings, my last Intel board o/c'd using percentages so any help would be appreciated.

System,

Memory : 2 x 2gb Cosair XMS2 DDR2 rated @ 5-5-5-12 6400 (800mhz)

CPU : E6300 1.86 Revision B2

Motherboard : Asus P5Q Pro

Currently running the system @ 2.8 with the following settings,

I want to try and push the chip past 3gig but want to just check I'm doing things correctly, the FSB strap, should that stay @ auto ?, and the other CPU voltage settings, is it better to set them manually ?, there doesn't seem to be a 'default' setting for the voltages just 'auto' or whatever you set them as manually, so if I do set them manually how do I know what to set them at ?

How do you recommend I proceed?

I had an E6300 at 3.15ghz for a while and have seen one stable at 3.5ghz!
Is you memory 'linked' to the FSB? I had mine separate so ocing the CPU and ocing the memory were separate events and the memory could NOT limit the overall CPU overclock.

I would have thought bump up the FSB and test again.
400x7= 2.8GHZ yes so try higher?

@ 400 fsb the loweset I can set my memory is @ 800mhz which is the rated speed of my memory, so going above 400fsb means I'm forced into overclocking my ram which I didn't want to do really.

Anyway I've now raised it to 429fsb so my E6300 is @ 3gig now @ 1.25v and memory @ 858mhz, just need to test stability now, first time I've had this chip @ 3gig, my old mobo was pretty crap @ overclocking.

So if I want to raise my cpu much higher I need faster ram right?

Is it safe to try and push my ram to 900mhz?

EDIT -

Also which of these idle temps am I supposed to trust?,

Seems to be quite a disparity between them, not sure which one to believe, considering my cpu is only running @ 1.25v I can't imagine it being as high as some of the above apps are reporting.

Couple more questions if you don't mind,

I've got my chip running rock solid @ 3gig now but now I want to see how much further I can push it.

When 'orthos' fails it's blend stress test how do I know if it's the memory or cpu that I need to tweak or up voltage?

EDIT - I updated the cpu voltage to 1.275v and it's currently passed 6 hours of 'orthos' @ 3.2gig now, problem is it hit 71c at one point, and thats while my room is at a cooler 22c, so think I may need a better cpu cooler first, I've got some generic heat sink on there atm with a 80mm cooler master fan on it.

Once I get a better cooler I'll try pushing the chip further, although my memory is already running past 900mhz now.

This overclocking lark is quite addictive :)

Any recommendations on a fairly cheap good 775 cpu cooler?

in terms of orthos, I just kept upping CPU voltage to under recommended 'max' to see how high I would go, so I didn't know if it was memory or CPU lol.

past 3.2ghz you got a very good chip IMO
