Hi :). I'm new here so hopefully I've posted this in the right place :).

I was basically looking for some advice, recently my gfx card broke my pc was really old so my boyfriend advised me that I'd probably just be cheaper to build a new one (with his help of course ;)).

I basically need a pc for browsing the internet, and playing a few games but nothing to advanced :). I'd like to make it pretty future proof with the option to upgrade in the future :).

I have a hard-drive already but basically need everything else, including a case & Windows 7. I don't really need a sound card just yet as I'll just use on board sound until I have the money for a decent one :). My budget is £400-£450 max.

With that budget I dont think we can make it future proof, do you have anything re-usable though, like a SATA drive??

Also do you need a monitor, keyboard or a mouse?

Thanks for the replies :).

Bacon? - Well future'ish proof would do, my old pc lasted me 5 years and it was from PC world haha. All I have that's re-usable is my HD unfortunately :(. No I still have my monitor, mouse & Keyboard from my old PC. I basically just need advice on hardware :).

RJC - Thank you for your suggestions :). I don't play any hardcore games, mainly just the Sims 3 which used to lag my old pc out :/.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i3-2120 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £99.95
1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-02050) £79.98
1 x MSI Z77A-G43 Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £77.38
1 x Sandisk Ultra SSD 60GB 2.5" SATA-2 Solid State Hard Drive - (SDSSDH-060G-G25) £49.99
1 x OCZ CoreXtreme 500w '80 Plus' Power Supply £32.99
1 x BitFenix Merc Beta Gaming Case - Black £31.99
1 x MSI HD 6450 1024MB GDDR3 Low Profile PCI-Express Graphics Card £31.99
1 x Kingston Blu 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9AD3B1K2/4G) £23.99
1 x OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £17.99
Total : £460.34 (includes shipping : £11.75).

Now I tuned down the graphics card, this will play games like WoW and Sims fairly easily from experience as they are generally more CPU intense games, WoW's old engine to blame for that.

The advantage of this build is that you get:
A Z77 mobo for future upgrades
A SB processor
An SSD for the Operating System

Okay according to my boyfriend I do have a SATA hard drive, sorry guys I don't know too much about hardware :/. I'll probably get a new one at some point, but right now I just want my pc up and running again :(.

Welcome to the forum.

If you have a sata HDD that's good! Is the optical drive not sata too?

You might have noticed the OS is eating up nearly a quarter of your budget. There is a developers copy of windows 8 available for free (it's legal) which will let you put off the purchase of the OS for a while (then you can choose between Win7 or Win8).

I like what RJC has spec'd for you, I don't understand why Bacon is suggesting such a small SSD that is sataII (the mobos support sataIII so that SSD is SLOW) especially as you already have a HDD :S

Obviously if you don't need the OS we can jiggle the spec around to get you a much better system or save you some cash :)

Maybe try a bit of Llano:

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD A8-3870K 3.00GHz (Socket FM1) APU Processor (AD3870WNGXBOX) £107.99
1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-02050) £79.98
1 x Gigabyte GA-A75M-UD2H AMD A75 (Socket FM1) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £69.38
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 430W V2 '80 Plus' Power Supply (CMPSU-430CXUKV2) £36.98
1 x Fractal Design Core 1000 Midi Tower Case - Black £32.99
1 x Kingston Blu 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9AD3B1K2/4G) £23.99
1 x OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £17.99
Total : £384.30 (includes shipping : £12.50).

However, there's no upgrade path. But for your needs it should last you for years. RJC's first build still seems to be the best in terms of overall performance and upgrade though.

I wasnt sure how many gigabytes the OS takes up so I suggested a small one just for the OS and main programs. I didnt notice it was SATA II though, cheers for that. :D

I know you are new here too, I don't mean to be rude but you aren't very good at this spec'ing lark. You really should know what you are suggesting and be able to give a decent explanation as to why you went for it. You are definately getting better though, you are not spec'ing the old AMD kit anymore.

That would be what I would build for the budget. Obviously i'm taking my own advice and would use the Windows 8 developers copy.

The i3 is an excellent bang for buck CPU. It has hyperthreading which basically means that although it's a dual core CPU it performs as well as AMDs quadcore CPUs. It's only real downside is that it can't be overclocked :(

The Z77 mobo has some nice tech in it. It allows overclocking of K series CPUs, if you upgrade much later you can exploit this. It also has four RAM slots (the h61 mobo for example only has two). I've spec'd 8GB of RAM which is more than enough but it's nice to know you could have bought 4GB of RAM and be able to add more later. The mobo also makes very clever use of the CPUs internal graphics, Lucid MVP it's called. The mobo will switch between the AMD GPU or the IGP depending on what's needed (saves power). When you are gaming it will use the IGP to boost the performance of the 6850 or if you are encoding videos it can use (quick sync) the IGP to greatly speed up the process :)

The 6850 may well be overkill for your gaming needs but none the less is a great budget gaming GPU, it can infact be overclocked to nigh on 6870 performance (£120 GPU). If you want futureproof on a budget this is the GPU to aim for.

The PSU is a decent brand and 550W is the minimum you want to be using really if you are using dedicated graphics cards and are toying with overclocking. Dropping to 500W or lower doesn't save you much cash and you did say you want the system to be futureproof as much as possible.

I've waffled on a fair bit but since Kay said she knows nothing about hardware I thought it best to explain the tech. Hopefully she can make a better informed decision as to what to buy now.

If a retail OS is a must with the system, I think I would prefer RJCs second build (maybe use this cheaper MSI Z77 mobo though). It does have the 6670 GPU rather than the 6850 but remember lucid MVP is going to boost it a lil for you (the next xbox was rumoured to use that 6670 GPU) ;)

Hope this helps, any questions or god forbid problems come build day you know where to find us :)

Thank you for all the suggestions I'll show them to my boyfriend and see what he thinks, as he has built a PC in the past and knows far more about it than me, I'll be sure to let you know what I decide to go with :).

It would definately be wise to tell us what you are buying before hand. The weekly offers change on the wednesday and to be honest these offers can play a big part in what we suggest

I prefer the blunt truth over anything else ;)
I think im getting better on some of the stuff like CPU's, GPU's and RAM.
But with the Mobo's and the HDDs and SSD's im a bit clueless :/

I finally got round to spec'ing a PC :). I've taken a few of your suggestions but mixed them up a bit :).

I went with the better ram because there's more of an upgrade path. I changed the gfx card to a slightly cheaper one because it'll more than handle the games I play for now, in the future I'll probably splash out on a better one and a sound card :).

So hopefully my spec is okay because I even managed to add Windows 7 for only £40 over budget :P.

The offers change tomoz so we might need to rethink the spec if you don't buy before then.

You have not got a optical drive on your list. Does that mean you managed to reclaim one from the old pc (it needs to be sata remember)?

I would honestly aim for my spec (post #13). The 6850 is all you will ever need to be honest, use the deveopers copy of windows 8 (its free). Makes more sense to pay out for an OS later than change the GPU. You could buy windows 8 once it's released or indeed windows 7 might be cheaper then ;)

oh p.s that Z77 mobo has THX rated onboard audio. I seriously doubt you will need to add a soundcard
