Building a new system and need a good mobo
Q9550 processor 1333fsb 12mb cache
4gb 800/1066mhz ddr2 ram
gtx 280
vista

i was thinking about getting the nvidia 780i what you think?

Unless you plan to go Sli in the future, no. Nvidia chipset boards are not very good these days. Go for the cheaper and better Asus P5Q Pro, E, or Deluxe.

I certainly wouldn't buy an NVidia chipset motherboard, and after having to RMA no fewer than 5 ASUS P5Q Pro's I wouldn't buy one of them either. There's an OcUK/J&W IP35-Pro on the member's market at the moment for £43 delivered. I'd buy that as it solid as a rock.

What's that all about then WJA?

I'm intending to use that board for a build next week, got on great with the P5Q-Deluxe so assumed the Pro would be a safe bet on a budget?

4 had non-functioning network ports and one just refused to boot at all. I'm not the only one with network port issues and someone on these forums had issues with the graphics slots not running at x16.

Using a p5q deluxe here and havent had a single issue with it, i upgraded from an evga 680ia1 which had its issues before dying on me (780i is just a 680 with a pcie 2.0 bridge chip). The p5q deluxe has been rock solid and a nice board to overclock on.

Deluxe.
Though weather its worth £40 more is upto you.
The Deluxe has a few tricks up its sleave like 16-phase power, better cooling and a few others small things.

While the Asus boards are quite good there does seem to be a few problems cropping up here and there so maybe look to another brand as there are equally good or in some cases better boards out there.

is the Asus P5E3 Deluxe Intel X38 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard better than the Asus P5Q Delukxe Intel P45 (Socket) 775)

Its DDR3 and has two x16 lanes for running crossfire, so you'd be paying for unnecessary tech if you buy the x38 chipset, you said in your opening post you have a GTX280.

If I was to get an Asus board which I wouldn't as there are other equally good brands out there I'd get the Asus Maximus II Formula. Bit-Tech's review last month was highly complimentary. Whichever board you get make sure its a P45 chipset.

i duno lol, what board do you recommend, im used to laptops and building them dont really know that much about desktops

If you plan to go SLI in the future then you'll need a board with an Nvidia chipset. Look here. But I wouldn't recommend any of them, others may do though.

As a GTX280 owner I can tell you that one card is more than enough for current games.
