I am about to begin the design of a case for my system that ideally will house most of the major parts all in one unit. This is meant to be part of the main living area furniture and as such will be a wood design cabinet.
I currently use a Logitech z5500 speaker system and plan keep it for some time, Ideally I want to incorporate the sub into this case design as it will make for an elegant solution to the monster size of the thing. I do have a couple of possible issues to tackle though first before even getting to sketches and plans.
I had considered first using mdf and then applying a veneer for the finish. However I have had a source of very cheap softwood timber in large amounts become available and it would cut down the cost of the build by nearly half. My main focus for mdf was how it absorbs vibrations and so would act as a nice buffer (with enough of it) between the sub and the main system area for mounts etc. Obviously solid wood will carry more, but providing things are all firmly fixed in place will there really be any problems to concern myself with?
Secondly while I love the z5500 I have opened the sub before and it became apparent that the case itself is absolutely horrible, so it will be tossed out. This means I will have to prefab a new shell as part of the bottom section. I don't really know that much about acoustics but I will guess I cannot just slap together a box shape, cut a hole for the tubing and speaker grill and expect the exact same performance. What sort of things will I need to take into consideration to ensure I maintain the same audio quality of the sub?
Finally I am yet undecided on weather or not to use metallic or wooden mounts for the components. Either can be prefabricated for this design with little to no difference in either cost or time. So far The only real advantage I can see for either option is that metallic ones can at least be all setup to be grounded fully to protect the entire system. But is there any other reason for a preference (other than asthetic) to use wood or metal?
A quick not about the picture, I am fully aware the sub looks like it is far too close to the main system and could risk interference, however there will be a substantial gap in the final design. This was simply to illustrate the basic layout I intend to use.
Many thanks in advance for any help that anyone offers on this.
Ok for some reason the jpeg from my dropbox link won't show, any ideas?
