Help with possible upgrade for video editing

Hi all,

I've recently got into photography and also shooting a few video clips.

I use Lightroom and Premiere Pro for editing but these programs run sluggishly as you would expect with my current aging setup listed below.

Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz (overclocked to 4.4ghz)

Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz (only 4gb I know..)

Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard

Do you think an upgrade to 16gb ram and a graphics card would do it? Or am I looking at a motherboard and cpu upgrade too?

Any help will be much appreciated, thank you.
 
yea, maybe time for a new system. Anything current from Intel or AMD will be a considerable performance increase. The video card is oof for efficiency at today's standards as well. A 1050ti will out perform it.

My opinion would be a new build.... but am also in a firm believer... if not broken don't fix it. It really depends on how you feel after reading some more people's responses.
 
What type of video ? 1080p or 4k?

If 1080p and dabbling with video then 16gb would be a massive improvement. As above a 1050ti would help a lot as well especially if you encoded using the nvenc encoder stuff. The i7 should manage alright as well.

SSD drives do make editing snappier .... But HDDs manage just fine as well for 1080p.

If your looking at 4k, then new machine would be better I reckon. But your just getting into it... So I wouldn't dump lots of money into it just yet....and learn with 1080p.


Lastly , I reckon Davinci resolve feels better performing that prempro.... Especially the full version.

I'm looking at 1080p videos for the moment to see how I get on.

I have a SSD drive and the one large mechanical drive for storage and like you said the SSD definitely helps.

For now i'll just get the 16gb Ram and the 1050ti and see how it goes, I don't really want to splash the cash until I know what i'm doing.

Ah that's great, i'll do some research on Davinci resolve and see what it's like.

The free version of resolve will let you do basic stuff, full colour correction, stabilisation ect, but a lot effects and things ( even basic sharpening ) is locked out for the full version. Encoding for output on the free version appears limited to CPU as well. (not that bad really for dabbling - it does fine ). Its certainly efnough to see how it performs in general for the user interface and workflow.
If you have the full version of Premiere Pro, then that will have more from the outset in terms of the effects. - but - going forward I moved away from a subscription of Adobe to Resolve and other programs because I found I wasn't using them enough to merit an ongoing price. I also felt that Resolve (free) was snappier and more reliable and didn't hang / pause like premiere.

I've since bought the full version of Resolve ... and its been great. Once running, its been a much better experience than PPro. Also the full version built in has the ability to use the GPU as the encoder - you can do that in PPro, but it appeared an addon/plugin fudge to me. Frankly it now screams through encodes. Yes its £250ish for the full version, but compared to my subscription, thats paid for and more within a number of months.

*EDIT* - Having a quick read across the web, it appears resolve can be GPU VRAM greedy, with some people saying that 3-4Gb VRAM cards can run out of memory, but 6Gb cards not so. So perhaps worth bearing in mind / reading up on before changing anything just yet.

Those are just my experiences though ... do the memory first and see how you get on.
 
if you can push 6 core intel or 8 core then you'd see a vast improvement !

With Prem Pro, could even grab ryzen 2700 as they have updated their coding for good performance

GPU wise, Prem Pro isn't heavy but paid Resolve is Heavy based on GPU- but you need equal power with both cpu & gpu to get the best results.

with lightroom, GPU has a good effect!

GTX 1660 out end of the week, might make gtx 1060 prices fall even more! Currently, looks like your running off the CPU for display? shows how much Lightroom will be hurting

Turing encoder on gtx 1660 will be damn good compared to pascal :D
