Help with Premiere. I am going *CRAZY*.

Ok, so I was working on a project at work and offered to finish it up at home, installed Premiere and so on.

But the problem is that no matter what I do, video is rendering / displaying strangely.

The files are promo videos that I recorded using screen capturing software. I then used Virtual Dub to resize them to 720/480 @ 30FPS. It is fine and runs perfect in virtual dub and any media player (WMP, Classic and so on).

BUT Premiere is really just not playing ball. I copied the project from work (all the files and so on) and double click the project file, and if the image is static in the preview window all is well, it displays perfect. but the second I press play, the video becomes garbled, like tops of words are missing, or become broken up.

I am pretty new to video, and googled but don't know what the term is. I assume it must be a setting in premiere because the files work *PERFECTLY* outside of it, and the project works fine at work.

Anyones suggests would be greatly appreciated.

Doesn't anyone have a clue?

I really have no idea why - video just doesn't seem to be displaying correctly at all.

I have tried all the field options, and even set up new projects. The video refuses to work.

What codec are you using for the video?

Premiere tends to kick up a fuss when using some codecs. You're best to stick with DV PAL (720 x 576 @ 25fps) if you want a smooth ride.

Hmmmm I have tried a few.

I had attempted to actually convert it in virtuadub to uncompressed RGB - still didn't make a blind bit of difference.

I have attemped to record a few other things to - same thing, it looks *fine* when the file is paused, the second it plays it becomes messed up.

I really am getting angry at this though... I even tried to convert it to an MPEG file... still didn't appreciate that.

Hmmm.

Have you tried updating/reinstalling Direct X? Could be a DirectShow problem.

Are you using Accelerated GPU Effects in your Playback Settings? Could also be causing a problem.

Well, I tried it on WIndows 7 and it is also an issue on Vista too.... separate installs on both systems.

It also appears when I have rendered the video too.

Would it be easier if I uploaded a screen shot of the problem?

Excuse the .jpeg artifacting and bad cropping :p

UN-paused video. It looks like this after rendering also -

Paused video in Premiere / how it looks outside of premiere.

Sorry about the compression once again.

Do you have your project set up to work with square pixels?

It looks as if Premiere might be interpreting the video as non-square pixels.

I'm a bit stumped to be honest!

Try adding some gaussian blur to the video. An amount of 0.2-2 should do. Sometimes adding blur with a setting of 0 helps, as it forces premiere to render the video properly.

Not sure what else could be causing the problem. Might be worth wandering over to the Creative COW forums or dvinfo.net.

You and I both... ended up having to finish it at work (am here now).

I did originally make the project in CS3 and move it to CS4 - BUT the original video files are still causing the problem, even in a new project made in CS4. I captured them using cam studio so /shrug.

I read somewhere about turning off the alpha channel on videos brought in from Cam Studio. In Premiere, If you right click on your video in the project bin and click Interpret Footage, you can set it to ignore the alpha channel. See if that works.

Other than that, I would advise that you set Cam Studio to record using DV codec or similar if importing into Premiere.

Sorry I couldn't be more help :(

I tried the alpha channel thing earlier :p

But the video is all up and running now from work- but I will probably fiddle about with the home project to try and figure what went wrong.

Have you tried changing the field order? try upper, lower and none (most likely this one given your source) to see if that makes any difference.

edit/ Also have you tried creating a custom project and matching every setting to your source video?
