Hi everyone, this is my 1st post so please be gentle with me as im no computer guru :(
Im looking to upgrade my Graphics card but want to keep the cost down but am worried about my PSU (info to follow) i have read that you can run a higher Wattage card than allowed by the current PSU without having to upgrade. Cost is my main issue.
The tech/info bit
AMD Sempron 2gz dual core 2200
4Gb RAM
GeForce 9200 (think its built in)
ACPI x86-based PC
PSU. FSP Group, FSP250-60HEN
DC out - + 3.3V, 17.0A + 5V, 18,0A + 12V1, 8.0A +5Vsb, +3.3V and FSV= 115W max, total not to excide 250W 14.0A,

Other info,
MCP78PVM-PM, it says inside PCI Expresss 2.0 and also HT5200
Its a Packard Bell pre=built case with lots on room inside for expansion

So what im looking for is can i run a better Graphics card than i have now and if yes some pointers as to what card i can get. Budget is around the 100GBP mark
Many thank in advance for your help

Welcome to the forums

Sorry but to be blunt your PSU is a low end bag of bolts which are best avoided. I guess this came with your PC you purchased originally.

You didnt give a budget.

If you are not planning on a major upgrade as your system is very old I would suggest something like

Corsair 430w as soon as possible before your PC blows up and

GTX 460
or
GTX 640

although the CPU will hold any GPU upgrade you do back.

You could *maybe get away with something bus powered like a 7750, but that psu is **** mate.

If I were you I would find a nice relatively low wattage branded psu, you won't be needing a big expensive monster. Should come to around 40-50.
Infact
This is what I would get:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-059-CS&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat= @£37
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-101-GI&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1699 @£90

A fair chunk over what you wanted to spend but definitely worth it.

Having said that, I have no idea which sempron you have, and I have no idea whether it will hold the 7770 back or not, so wait for other opinions, lawl.

Oh btw ignore AMD's 500w 7770 requirement, that's ridiculous.

the mobo would most likely have an agp slot rather than a pci-e slot (if it indeed does even have a slot), so i dont think upgrading to anything recent would be possible. best bet is to have a look at ebay tbh.
and since your computer is a packard-bell premade, the mobo bios may not accept a new additional card

sorry all i can find inside the comp is the above info in the 1st post, was not sure if this was to do with the mobo MCP78PVM-PM ? PC is about 2/3yrs old now

so a quick search shows the board is socket am2 with an n-force southbridge and igp
and actually does have a pci-e slot

Thanks Tamzzy again due to me being a complete thicko regarding the terms what type of card would it allow me to fit ? would it take a GTX 550ti if i upgrade to PSU or do i need to look at the lower end like a 440

i think your best bet is to look for a 2nd hand ati 5570 or nvidia gt 240. the 250w psu just doest cut it. and i wouldnt pay more than 25 quid for either card 2nd hand.

but the other issue is if the packard bell bios would recognise the additional card or not

you could upgrade the psu and get either of those cards (and let's assume the bios would recognise the cards fine)
but your processor is so anaemic those cards wont be performing to their max

before you spend your money, may I ask why do you want to upgrade your graphics, and what do you intend to use it for?

edit:
oop[s just read the whole thread and didnt know you already bought the bits.
