I upgraded my system a few months ago, new power supply, case and graphics card. I kept all of the other parts from my old HP pc.

However, because the case i got (Antec P280) with the adjustable fan speed, i have to keep this random fan from my old pc connected or it wont let me boot up the machine.

Does anyone know what i should do to be able to get rid of it? Its ugly.

When you boot with it dc'd does the bios display an error? Usually some will say "cpu fan error" due to the monitoring being setup in the BIOS which you can disable.

Yeah, it boots with an error when it's not plugged in. Although, I can easily proceed, it's just annoying that I have to have a fan dangling in my case in order to not get any errors.

By the looks of it, it is meant to be the header for the main rear exhaust fan. I've never come across a BIOS that will stop you from booting because of a chassis fan error with no option of disabling, but if there was any case fan it would decide was crucial it might be that one. Where is your main rear chassis fan connected to? Try connecting it to that header instead.

My chassis fans are connected by molex, ive just taken the bloody thing out. It seems to be the only solution. I'll just have to put up with presing F2 every time I boot it up

You could always install a different 3 pin fan in the rear slot and plug it in to the motherboard. I'm sure you could use the stock Antec fan elsewhere on your system.

There are other ways to get a tach signal to the chassis header connector but it would involve some soldering of wires to connectors and what not.
