Hi,

I am looking to upgrade my ageing Q6600 system in the next month or so and as funds are a bit tight I was hoping to reuse some of what I currently have (at least initially anyway). Current system as follows:

Q6600
GA-EP35-DS3R
Xigmatek HDT-S1283 cooler
Corsair HX620W Modular Power Supply
OCZ 4GB Kit (2x2048) Reaper HPC Edition DDR2
Corsair MX100 SSD
2 x Seagate 250GB Barracuda SATA II HDD
GTX 660 Graphics card
Antec 900 case

I am hoping to be able to simply swap out the motherboard, processor and RAM and reuse everything else.

The system is used for mainly playing games. I am currently using a 19" monitor (1440x900) which is probably why things have lasted as long as they have. I may get 22" screen at some point in the future.

So any advice on how to best spend £300-400. Also, is there a market for selling on the old mb,processor,RAM?

Cheers,
Rob

Hi,

Yes you will be able to sell your CPU/board/cooler (only fits intel LGA775 and AMD)+RAM, there is a market for that.

You can keep your,

Case,
GFX card,
SSD,
HDDs.

So you need a CPU/board+RAM+cooler.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-SLI - Devils Canyon Core i5 4690K Bundle **£12 Saving** £269.98
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £49.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Savage Red 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (HX324C11SRK2/8) £46.99
1 x Raijintek Themis Black Heatpipe CPU Cooler PWM - 120mm £19.99
Total : £396.55 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Included a new PSU as yours is getting on a bit and they degrade over time.

Then save up for a newer GFX card.

OR,

Get a CPU/boardRAM bundle and a bgrade 280X,

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus H81M-K Intel Core i5 DIY Micro ATX Motherboard, CPU & RAM Bundle £228.97
1 x **B Grade** MSI Radeon R9 280X Gaming Edition OC 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express G (GX-225-MS) £139.99
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £49.99
Total : £428.56 (includes shipping : £8.00).

The 280X gives a good gain over the GTX660 - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1039?vs=1041 - but at your res its not needed at all.

Hi,

Thanks for the recommendations, I was hoping to reuse the cooler and PSU but the 1st option with the 4690k seems good and is in budget so will probably go for that.

I presume it is better to get the 'k' processor to give to option of running it with an overclock as I intend to keep this new system for a good few years.

Is there any benefit is going with a modular PSU in order to keep the case a little bit neater to improve ariflow?

Also would it be worth changing the fans in the case now or wait until they fail (and is this possible/easy enough)?

Thanks for the help.

Rob.

Your cooler only seems to support intel lga775 from the tech specs.

A modular PSU is always nice.

Hi,

I have just bought a Crucial MX100 SSD, just waiting for new OS to come to install on it (though it was probably the best time to upgrade from Vista)!

Any good modular PSUs for a similar price to the superflower linked? The inside of the Antec 900 is quite cramped. I think later revisions had better cable management but mine was an early one that i took a disc cutter to to make the cabling slightly neater, there isnt much room behind the motherboard tray though. If the superflower is the best one to go for im sure I can deal with the unused cables.

Now im pondering changing the case whilst I am at it - I knew this was going to cost me. Any good, cheapish cases with plenty of airflow around? Sorry, but i am bit out of touch with these things as you may have guessed.

Cheers,
Rob

Is the 'gold' Superflower a better PSU that those 'bronze' ones? Is there any significance to the term?

I guess i would rather have the better PSU regardless of modular capabilities. Sorry for being a pain.

Its technically better I suppose being Gold rated, the Antec is made by Seasonic so decent anyway.

The NZXT is made by Sirtec so not as good.

Is the 'gold' Superflower a better PSU that those 'bronze' ones? Is there any significance to the term?

The 'metal' terms refer to the efficiency of the PSU.

Higher ratings aka Gold over Bronze means a higher efficiency leading to less power consumption and therefore less heat.

Spending more on a good power supply to last you is a wise idea and that SuperFlower has a 5 year warranty.

Slow day at work so plenty of time to look into these things.

I think im going to go with the following as per Stulid's first suggestion:

1 x Gigabyte Z97X-SLI - Devils Canyon Core i5 4690K Bundle **£12 Saving** £269.98
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £49.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Savage Red 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (HX324C11SRK2/8) £46.99

I presume these will last me a few years at least (bearing in mind im still running a Q6600 system).

I am now considering the merits of a new case as well, since my Antec 900 has poor cable management and no dust filters on the fans. Also the fans are those that originally came with the case so could probably do with being changed anyway. So I guess I could go to about £75 on a new case.

I like the styling of the Antec 900 so basically looking for something similar but with cable management, dust filters and good airflow. Any suggestions? The Zalman Z11 has caught my eye is it worth changing to?

Cheers,
Rob

That CM 690 III case comes with a free cooler that I am sure has LGA compatability? It's a good well reviewed case.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-212-CM&groupid=2362&catid=29 £90 With a Cooler master Seidon Cooler included.

Power supply. Most reputable brands last a long time. I would be in no hurry to change, but would recommend a modular model, SuperFlower leadex, EVGA, Seasonic. Most come with 5/7/10 year guarantees because contrary to some Internet rumours a reasonable quality psu can last a reasonable amount of time and usually without a detrimental effect on it's abilities.
I would hazard a guess that though possibly not as efficient or having lost a small percentage of it's output ability and reliability, your PSU will still deliver enough for your current system, or your current components on a new i5/Z97 set up, and therefor could be upgraded before you buy a GPU.

The truth is a new cpu/motherboard/memory would work with what you have. Stock cpu cooler would do for a while.

I myself usually upgrade my case psu and cooler 1st, then graphics card then add a new motherboard etc. But I think if you have a specific budget right now, that would allow you to upgrade your motherboard cpu and memory, it will make the biggest difference, then worry about the PSU case gpu and cooler. After all, the motherboard bundle is usually the most expensive, next to a graphics card, things like a case, power supply n such are easier to save for later.

Good call mate, when your browsing the web or doing productivity/office stuff is when you'll really appreciate the SSD.

I'd consider using a non modular PSU, good bang for your buck and you cant use the cabling. Just cable tie the excess cables to the top or bottom of the case, no biggie.

The cooler that comes with the CM 690 III is the Cooler Master Seidon 120v that can be viewed here: http://www.coolermaster.com/cooling/seidon/seidon-120v/

which has compatibility with:

Intel LGA 2011-3 / 2011 / 1366 / 1150 /1155 / 1156 / 775
AMD Socket FM2+ / FM2 / FM1 / AM3+ / AM3 / AM2

So will do anything you could want it to do! It represents cracking value.
