I'm looking to replace my i7 920 setup as it just isn't wanting to boot at all really anymore, and I'd like to get something newer.

I'm looking to replace the motherboard, cpu and ram and so far I've come up with these setups and I'm not sure what would better suit my needs:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus Z97 Pro Gamer - Devils Canyon Core i7 4790K OEM CPU & Motherboard Bundle **£35 OFF** £348.97
1 x Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - OEM £191.99
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8320 Black Edition 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £119.99
1 x Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 AMD 990FX (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £107.99
1 x **B Grade** Gigabyte Z97X-SOC Force Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard **Overclockers UK (MB-510-GI) £97.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Fury White 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-14900C10 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit (HX318C10FWK2/8) £52.99
Total : £919.92 (includes shipping : ).

I have included the AMD setup that I was considering too, but I do think that Intel would be better.

As for my usage, I mainly use my PC for gaming (on a varying range of titles), but I am also wanting to get back into games development/programming stuff with programs like Unity 5 and I'm not really sure what setup would be the best for me (although I suspect that it'll be the i7 setup)

Oh and as for budget, it is flexible but I don't want to spend too much more than £400

I have the board in the bundle with a 4690k and have no problems with it whatsoever. Really easy to overclock in the bios too! You can also drop an i7 in there at a later date.

The i7 tends to be better for coding and programming that kind of stuff with its more cores and stuff. For £350 you can't go wrong.

You may want the 16GB ram if you're doing rendering and that stuff.

yeah I was considering 16gb of ram, as I did think it would help, both in rendering and actually in star citizen, as I have noticed that on my laptop I use close to 8gb of ram

yeah, I think it is because of the free week for some of the ships, meaning that I had too many for my pc :p

also I'd get the orange version of that ram due to my colour scheme with my r9 290x oc :D

Ahh fair enough.

Yeah you'll have to turn off the red light on the motherboard then. It has some red outline near the sound chip bit. Which goes nicely with my black and red build, although my black and yellow 290x clashes :(

Yeah I probably will, I think I may end up watercooling properly again, but I think the cm nepton 120xl that I won at pax will do for now :D

Well it's alright for some! I never win a thing :( I was close to winning a case on here but never won.

I cannot wait to watercool. Going to see what AMD brings out before i start though. And maybe get another motherboard, one that looks a bit prettier.

I also won a 240gb PNY ssd and a 64gb hyperx usb drive :D

I have watercooled my systems before, just don't currently have it :p

Isn't there a xeon westmere hex core you could drop straight in - might be worth a punt for the £60 - £70 mark.
There's a thread on here somewhere...I'll have another look.

Seems a x5650 is a good buy if you already have a 1366 board capable of overclocking.

sounds interesting and I do have a nice evga x58 sli board, only problem is that I am not sure what part of my system is causing me to crash tbh, I'm pretty sure it's the mobo/cpu/ram, but when I ran memtest before everything checked out ok

Iirc its a 650w bequiet model (don't remember off the top of my head) and unfortunately I don't have a spare working one to hand :(

Originally I did think the problem may be the ram/PSU

Before it was getting to the loading windows screen and crashing, so I tried to reinstall windows and it crashed at around halfway. Now when I try to get it to install windows it will either get to the BIOS just before I save and crash or not even display anything :/

Also I just read into it and apparently I need to modify my board to use that Xeon?
