Hi guys

When I originally set up the wireless mode on my time capsule I was using it as an extender for my router.

However somewhere along the line my WiFi has decided to fix itself in 802.11b mode delivering a max of 11 Mb/s on my virgin 50 Mb/s Internet.

To investigate ive now set up two wireless networks, one from the router and one from the time capsule.

I've enabled a separate 5ghz channel for my iPad 2 thinking that would offer the full 50 Mb/s using 802.11n

However the 5ghz channel is actually slower only offering 30 Mb/s on speedtest vs 40 Mb/ s for the normal channel

Can somebody explain what's going on please ?

Thats not what i want to do.

My router appears to be running really slow for some reason, and even when i force it to 802.11n none of my devices can get more than 15 Mb/s out of it. But thats for another thread.

I'm just curious as to why the 5ghz network is slower on my ipad 2. I though the 5ghz network on the airport extreme was supposed to be faster ?

reading this

it appears that creating a separate 5ghz SSID and trying to force my ipad onto a 5ghz network might actually be counter productive.

which would probably explain why the 5ghz network is actually slower than the combined one.

So it looks as though i mis understood the point of the 5ghz network. Why did apple include this feature at all ?

Ok so I disabled the separate 5ghz network

However I'm still only getting about 40 Mb/s when I can get my full 50 Mb/s on wired.

Given 802.11n is 300 Mb/s surely 50 Mb/s should be easy ??

Depends on channel use, other devices in your house etc

Wireless is a pain in the butt to diagnose

5GHz is there as it suffers less interference and is faster over a smaller radius that the 2.4GHz spectrum
