Some parts could be deemed as overkill but it's a great base unit to expand on. If he get's into video editing etc, a second hand i5K could be dropped in later and overclocked easily.

PSU is modular and made by seasonic, it's a bargain even if it is overkill wattage wise. The G840 has plenty of poke or the price, i've used it many a time for home office builds. A cheaper PSU and case would possibly get the i3 CPU in reach though I suppose

• big, fast ssd.
• 1tb hdd
• the b75 chipset features native sataiii + usb3.0 so no third party controllers, it also has "intel small business advantage" features which can do things such as lock out certain usb class devices.

Cheaper and more powerful. Better integrated graphics, smaller form factor (I don't know if this is important to you or not?), better structural quality (chassis). That PSU is overkill for that setup, 350W will be more than enough if he will not be needing an additional graphics card for gaming.
