Is the Vista DVD a retail one or was it an .iso which you burned to DVD?

I've also had a problem where i had 4GB of RAM in my machine when i tried to install Vista, but it wouldn't boot/load. So i took 2GB out to make 2GB and it booted fine so try that.

Is it the discs have you got any different ones to try ? ie +R or +RW I only ask because I had a similiar issue and ended up buying a new rewriter as I needed to gain access to these spcific discs :)

Not sure if this helps you but i built a system for a friend with a pioneer sata dvd drive and when i put the vista disk in it took over fifteen minutes for the screen to come up. This was after i thought there was a problem and tried many other things in the end i put the disk in and wanted a coffee went downstairs had a visit from a friend and by the time i got back up the screen was up. You could also try the ahci setting in bios see if that makes a difference ie if it isn't set to that change it so it is and so on. Other then that i have nothing else to offer you but the hope you can get it sorted without anymore long nights m8.

I think there is a bigger issue here then vista not working. Your card cant handle drivers being installed so I would check that the card isnt faulty (in another PC).

Damn - thought this might be another "PC fans giving me stomachache" type threads :p How disappointing...

Actually, that may make sense with regard to Vista install as well.

I'm sure that Vista install increases resolution using generic chipset drivers, something like 1024*768, so if the card is borked, then the install couldn't complete because the card couldn't cope with anything higher than 640*480.

Anyone else agree with this?

Sounds like a reasonable guess. Try a different gfx card and see what happens.
