Help with Temp readings for Conroe 6600

Hi Everyone,

I have just successfully upgraded my rig to Core2 goodness, I have the following:

Asus P5B Deluxe (wifi) Bios 1004
Conroe 6600
2gb Corsair DDR800 6400 (4:4:4:12)
Tagan 580W

My problems encountered so far seem to be ones that quite frankly I didnt expect from such a decent bit of kit.

For example, upon installing windows and all my usual crap on there I noticed the sound was crackling from the speakers, an updated driver from Asus seems to have solved this.

Secondly, navigating between folders seems to be slow and laggy, I simply dont have the fluidity I had with my old Athlon 4400 X2.

Thirdly, the temperature of the cpu with the side panel off runs at a nice 34C, Arctic Silver 5 was applied to the stock cooler (paper thin layer on cooler and then a to the centre of the cpu, sized of a single grain of rice) however, with the side panel on it runs between 43-47C idle! Is this typical? Bearing in mind that I have a Coolermaster aluminium case. I am also using the Asus Ui utility to give me the readings.

I wish to overclock to at least 3.0GHz if possible so with idle temps that high, can anyone advise me what I should be looking for temp wise, obviously the lower the better but as a rule of thumb what is typical?

Is there a nice easy guide to ocing using a Asus P5B...and will my memory be able to do this? I am confused as to the FSB 1:1 ratio and what this means.

Lastly, do Conroes run better at 2T or 1T?

Thanks for any help,

emissary

Hi Corasik,

Thanks for the reply. Regarding the temps, With the side panel on the temps go from 43 - 47C. I will use the suggested applications for temperature monitoring.

My case is a Wavemaster with 2 intake fans and 2 at the back, but I only actually have 1 at the back at them moment.

I will use Prime95 to stress the pc for a few days and to see how it copes, my worry is when i come to oc it, it might get really REALLY hot given the current temps.
