Hi guys, my girlfriends car has start making horrid grinding noises when the clutch is engaged (pedal to the floor). It does this at idle and when in neutral and also when you try and pull away.

I'm pretty sure the clutch has gone but would like a second opinion please. When you try and pull away the car try's to stall even though you are giving it plenty of rev's. This leads to it jerking when pulling away.

Sometimes (but not all the time) it is very hard to engage a gear when on the move, i.e. you take it out of one gear and it grinds when you try and select another gear, as if you don't have your foot on the clutch at all.

The weird thing is, the clutch does not appear to be slipping... I have done the usual test of putting the hand break on and trying to pull away. The car pull's fine and does not slip.

So... would a new clutch kit solve this? Mr Clutch have quoted £175 all in, which to be honest I thought was quite reasonable. However, I am tempted to have a go myself as I have help a friend change the box / clutch on an RX7

The car is a Ford 2000 mk5 Fiesta 1.3lt

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like the clutch release bearing has seized. However I would absolutely avoid Mr Clutch, they are the worst of the fast fit bodgers. For your £175 you will get a re-lined, secondhand clutch and it will be fitted as quickly, and with as little mechanical sympathy as is possible.

Yep, I agree with Dogbreath, sounds like the clutch release bearing.

If you've got the space and time, its simple enough to do yourself. Just make sure you get OEM parts - might seem relatively expensive compared to Mr Clutch prices, make sure you don't fall into the trap of "oh, its only 50 quid more, I may as well take it there" :)

Thanks guys, does the release bearing usually come included in a clutch kit (drive plate & clutch cover)

yup, quite often its the bearing that goes and ruins the clutch springs, so it is included.
i managed to change the clutch on mine by myself, it wasnt easy, but i managed. hardest part being removing and refitting the gearbox

A little like this...

As said above, the worst bit is removing driveshafts/box !

Thanks guys, I'm trying to get a list of parts together... from what I can make out is the release bearing the same thing as a concentric slave cylinder ?

What else would i need other than than the below to do this job

Clutch Cover
Drive Plate
Release bearing / CSC (? if this is even needed and not included with the above?)

I will be avoiding Mr Clutch as i have just been reading some reviews, seem like a bunch of cow boys.

EDIT: Not sure if we are allowed to link to eBay? but OCuk don't sell clutches, so don't see why not.

Is this the correct kit? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-FIESTA-M..._CarParts_SM&hash=item1e5d96b0d3#ht_669wt_911

Obviously i know this is not Ford parts, just so i know all the bits i need. :)

Another quick question guys, I don't have the car here to look at it.. is this clutch hydraulic or cable driven?

I was under the impression it was hydraulic but Ford's system is saying this Reg is cable driven?!

its a 2000 Fiesta 1.3

Thanks!
