Hi all,
Hoping I could have some advice and pointers on what I can do in this situation.
I haven't really played demanding games in quite some time but due to the arrival of HL Alyx I decided I might need an upgrade. I did a thread about a potential mobo/cpu upgrade a couple days ago but i'm in two minds at the moment and worried that the problem might not be my specs.
I've got a Oculus Rift CV1 and I can't say I remember noticing much of a performance issue in the past, but since using it again I don't seem to get 90fps to stick on most apps. I get black either side of the lenses sometimes when I move, as if the image can't keep up. The frame drop dialog in the performance overlay goes up constantly and the fps sticks around 45fps but tries to reach 90fps, never getting there except if there's nothing on screen.
I thought this might be my specs but upon googling and reading the forum I see people with similiar or lower specs having no issues.
My 4690k is running at 4.3ghz, with the setting that means the multiplyer goes up and down depending on load (I'm not experienced with OC'ing so dunno if that's bad or not)
I have a 1070gtx Quick silver OC and 16gb ddr3.
I've closed down all unnecesary processes, Nvidia 3d settings are set to 'Prefer maximum performance'. Using Oculus tray tool to set power plan to high.
When in VR the CPU usage on task manager is around 100%, with most of the high usage coming from the VR processes (SteamVR, Oculus services etc), not noticing anything else taking more than 5%.
I haven't had a clean install of Windows since 2017 and then I think that was the W10 upgrade if the year makes sense?
I have a list of parts for a CPU/mobo upgrade, new PSU, around £600 (please see my other thread) but I'm not sure if it'll really improve things if theres a problem elsewhere, or its the 1070 gtx.
What should I try next? How do I tell what is causing the issues? Or is it likely to be my hardware?
Would a clean install of Windows make any difference?
Cheers for the help
