Help With Understanding Broadband Service

I am currently with TalkTalk for my internet service. We have always had issues with it, and we are paying more than we should be for the services we get as deals have improved over the years.

Now, I'm looking at different broadband deals and am getting a bit confused over the speed.

We pay our line rental to TalkTalk, and apparently the line to our house supports maximum 6MB download speed.
Our package is for the fastest speed TalkTalk can provide, yet the only download speed we have ever actually received is 1.2MB.

So, I am a bit confused as to why this is. Why am I only getting 1.2MB download speeds when my line can support 6MB?
Is it because of poor TalkTalk line rental?

Will it always be 1.2MB no matter what broadband I get from any provider?

Any help would be much appreciated, Thanks.

Ill cover the basics

Where is the router connected to?
How many telephone sockets do you have, and how many in use?
Are they all filtered?
Disconnect them all except your bb line
Try connecting to your master telephone socket?
Still not resolved? Locate your test socket (its behind your master socket, remove the 2 screws ect)
Change to a new microfilter.

Do you have any noise on the line when on a call?

If the above does not resolve your speed issue, your line profile might be capped to 1.2mb

Can we know your exchange and distance from the exchange.(samknows)
And also your router stats please.
Hope this helps

Chris

Router is connected to the master socket.
3 sockets, 2 connected.
All filtered.
Tried disconnecting, resets, TalkTalk have reset it many times to cure faults, etc.
Tried new microfilter.

BUT, yes, I have noticed recently (strangely it didn't seem to do this before) that when on a phone call, the person on the other end seems distant AND, more importantly, if I am typing on the computer at the same time, I can hear my typing on the phone...?
Also, probably related, when you hang up the phone the internet sometimes drops down to Limited Connectivity and doesn't work for a minute..

My Exchange - 5153m away.

My router is the D-Link DSL 2640R.

I'll try and answer questions quickly...ask again if you're not sure. Just because TalkTalk say that you can get 6mb doesn't mean you will get anywhere near that. Many factors to take into consideration, but the biggest one for you is distance from the exchange, that is probably the biggest factor. Wiring to and in your property is also a big factor. Also, what are you using to test your download speed? If you use router stats (figures from your router) then that is the sync speed not the download speed, and your download speed will be less due to overheads etc. Test using a broadband speed checker, I personally use www.speedtest.net but as long as you stick to the same one you can use it to see if you have improvements/changes.
Regarding extensions/sockets - if they are badly wired or similiar this can make a big difference. Try using the test socket as aobove or disconnecting your phones and see if this improves things. Get into your router and post some stats about line noise/attenuation etc. and we can give you some more advice. Also, without sounding harsh on TalkTalk they are probably one of the worst ISP's I have personally dealt with, with often rubbish results. Changing your ISP will probably make a difference...
