Hello everyone, currently debating on a new motherboard and cpu so i thought id ask for your opinions :)

Currently got a Gigabyte motherboard *GA-M55PLUS-S3G rev a2*
Dual Core AMD, 4200 @ 2.2Ghz

I've got everything else thats good, well good enough Lol. A 600w OcZ PSU, 2GB ram and one BFG 8800GTX.

In another thread i made abit back someone recommended a P35 Motherboard + Quad Core ? .. I dont really know a great deal about motherboards + CPU's, hense this post on someone to help me :) :D

If you could post up some recommendations that would be great, Budget - Not too sure, 200-300 ?

Thanks :D

Is the Ram DDR or DDR2? I don't happen to know offhand what your current motherboard supports and asking is easier than trying to find out from the website at the moment.

What sort of tasks do you mainly use your PC for? That is likely to determine how much of a boost you will see from changing.

Its Geil low latency DDR2 Ram ... Motherboard socket is 940 :)

Mainly use it for games, but also applications like Sony Vegas etc

In that case this is about as cheaply as you can upgrade. I don't know if Sony Vegas supports multicore properly but I'd assume it does so it might prove of benefit to you. :)

Motherboard socket is 940
No, it is AM2. "Socket 940" is the pre-754 and 939 socket (used registered ECC memory).

What games are you having problems with? An overclock on that X2 might fix it if the 8800 GTX is bottlenecking.

P35 + Quad (Q6600) is the usual for that kind of budget, not sure whether you could stick a Phenom in that AM2 board (even if you could I'd wait for the B3 revisions).

Would this be a noticable difference to what i have already ? .. I have some issues with my current setup concerning FPS, as its being bottlenecked by my CPU you see. Thats why i want to get the most from my 8800GTX :D

Thanks for the help too ! :)

**I tried to overclock the CPU in bios not so long ago, all i got was an error message and it wouldn't boot up until i changed it back to normal settings.

Waster's spec is fine, and yeah you should notice a big performance increase especially in multithreaded applications.
