Got a windows laptop that wont boot and so want to copy the files off it before wiping. I thought I'd use a Linux Live Cd called System Rescue CD to do the job, but being a complete novice I'm having some issues.

I followed the instructions on the website here and can browse the drive fine using Midnight Commander but I'm stumped on how to copy the files to an external HDD. The instructions are only for copying over a network.

If anyone could help that would be fantastic, and if you recommend I use a different program then thats fine.

Thanks!

You might be better off just trying an Ubuntu live CD to do the job. Drives will, in most cases, be mounted automatically and you can just drag and drop. Provided the laptop will boot the Ubuntu CD in the first place, of course. :)
